A special session will be held by the Wagner City Council to hear the request made by Gerrit Juffer for the repeal of the Wagner ETJ at 5:30 p.m. this coming Thursday, June 20th. Anyone interested in the Repeal of the ordinance should plan to attend this city council meeting.
ETJ stands for Extraterritorial Jurisdiction. What this means is that the city government has the legal ability to exercise beyond its normal boundaries. According to a post made by Mayor Tammy Thorton, the Wagner ETJ was implemented several years ago. The ETJ encompasses a one-mile radius around the Wagner city limits. It was originally put into place to protect Wagner, its citizens and also the citizens who do not have voting rights within the Wagner city limits but live within a onemile radius of Wagner. Another intention of the ETJ was to put into place a safeguard against wind towers, confinements, feed lots and other undesirable things like junkyards, etc. from popping up in the residential areas of Wagner, but has since possibly confined the growth of Wagner and its surrounding area when it comes to building. In order to even get something as simple as a garage or shed built on one’s property it now has to go through the ETJ committee.
At the upcoming meeting ETJ will be explained and Gerrit Juffer will make a presentation about his stance on why the Wagner ETJ should be Repealed. If interested in learning more or wanting to hear about the pros and cons of the ETJ please plan on attending the special meeting of the Wagner City Council this Thursday, June 20th at 5:30 p.m. at the Wagner City Hall.
