South Dakota History Made in Wagner

What a special moment for Wagner and for one of its own as Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal was recently selected to play in the McDonald’s All American Game, becoming the first South Dakota girl in history to earn the honor. When she found out the news, “I was just really excited and it didn’t even feel real,” Koupal said.

For Ashlyn, the selection is more than just a personal achievement. It’s a reflection of years of hard work and the many people who helped her along the way. She calls it a “huge honor” and says she’s grateful for every opportunity that has brought her to this point. Seeing the work she’s put in pay off has made the moment even more meaningful.

She’s especially proud to represent Wagner and the state of South Dakota on the national stage.

“I’m excited to go and represent Wagner and I am thankful for all the support I have received from the community,” she said.

Ashlyn shared that it was after her eighth-grade year when things really started to click. That’s when she began taking basketball more seriously and truly fell in love with the game.

Family has played a big role in her journey. She credits her Aunt Mandy as someone she looked up to growing up, always hearing stories about how talented she was and wanting to follow in her footsteps. Her sister Macy has also been a major influence. “I grew up looking up to her and always competing with her. We pushed each other daily and I give her a lot of credit for my success,” Ashlyn said.

Over the years, Ashlyn feels her game has grown, especially physically. As she’s matured, she’s become more versatile, able to play both inside and outside, which has helped elevate her game to the next level.

She’s looking forward to competing with and against the best players in the country and is excited to see some of her All Iowa Attack teammates at the event, even having the chance to play alongside one of them.

Growing up in a small-town environment has shaped her both as a player and as a person. As a young girl, she served as a team manager and looked up to the players her parents coached. Being surrounded by a close-knit community that cares and pushes her to be better has made a lasting impact.

Ashlyn believes her achievement sends a strong message about opportunities in South Dakota. “No matter where you are, if you put in the work, you will reach your goals,” she said.

As she prepares for the big game, her goal is simple: play her game and enjoy every moment. She hopes young athletes back home see her journey as proof that big dreams are possible, even from a small town like Wagner.

Ashlyn also wanted to share her appreciation. “I would just like to thank everyone who has been with me along the way. None of this would have been possible without the people around me pushing me and wanting the best for me in everything I do. The community has been so supportive along with my friends, family, and teammates. Lastly, I just want to give all the glory to God.”

For Wagner, it’s a historic moment. For Ashlyn Koupal, it’s the next step in a journey that started right here at home.
