SOCIOLOGY CLASS DROPS EGGS; LEARNS SOCIAL STRATIFICATION
Sociology class participated in an activity to better understand social stratification and the social classes. The students were divided into three classes: the upper class, the middle class, and the poverty class. Each group was given an egg and an amount of money to buy protection for their egg. Their buying power symbolized the different opportunities and what different social classes can afford for their children.
The groups built a protective layer around their egg, and then dropped their egg from 6 feet. The upper class could provide more protection and was the only egg to “survive” the drop. This experiment showed the students how wealthy countries and parents can afford better opportunities for their young children.
Sophomore Grace Vanderlei said, “It was a good learning experience, and also lots of fun.”
