SINGERS EARN HIGH RATINGS AT VOCAL CONTEST IN VERMILLION
Avon prepared 21 selections for the annual Vocal Contest in Vermillion on February 9. The judges rate each selection from one (the best score you can get) to five (the lowest score you can get).
The first group was the sophomores with some of the senior girls. They sang a song called “Johnson Boys,” and they finished with a score of two. The next group was the all-boys group. They sang “Prayer of the Children,” and they received a score of two. After the boy's group, Kalee Mixon performed a solo called “Nightwinds.” She received a score of two. Next came Ashley Tolsma singing “Roses,” and receiving a one. Haden Cahoy is the next soloist. He sang the song “My Good Lord Done Been Here.” He received a score of one. The Junior group sang the song “January Hymn,” and they got a score of two. The next group is the freshmen girls singing “The Journey,” and receiving a score of two. The next selection was a duet by Kley Heumiller and Landon Thury. They sang “Uh-Hum Froggie went A’ Courtin,” and received a score of one. The next duet was Makayla Kopp and Ashley Tolsma. They sang “I am a Small Part of the World,” and received a score of one. After Kopp and Tolsma, Airen Cline and Jaydon Driesen sang “Side by Side.” They received a score of one. Next, Sarah Swier and Kimmy Tolsma sang “A New Horizon,” and received a score of one. Next, with a piano solo was Erica Cahoy playing “Barcarolle and Magic Carpet of Dreams.” She received a score of one. The next was a vocal duet with Kley Heumiller and Airen Cline. They sang the song “Hallelujah Amen,” and the gentleman received a score of two. Last but not least of the duets was Erica Cahoy and Haden Cahoy singing “When We Sing.” The siblings received a score of two.
The first ensemble was Gunnar Voigt, Kaeli Wallinga, and Ashley Tolsma. They sang “I Will Fly,” and got a score of two. Next was Kimmy Tolsma, Kley Heumiller, Makayla Kopp, and Sarah Swier singing “Walk Through Life.” They received a score of two. After the last ensemble, Grace Vanderlei, Karlie DeVries, Kinley Doom, and Macy Voigt sang “Howdidow Deediddle,” receiving a score of one. The next ensemble was Grace Vanderlei, Kinley Doom, Caleb Wallinga, and Trevor Eggers. They sang “Ain’t That Good News.” This ensemble received a score of two. Last but not least of all groups, duets, and solos was Kimmy Tolsma, Sarah Swier, and Makayla Kopp. They sang “I Will Sing You the Stars.” This trio got a score of one.
Out of the 21 selections, 11 received ones, and 10 received twos.
