SIDE BY SIDE ACTION HIGHIGHTS WAGNER SPEEDWAY

By
Rod Pattison

On a picture-perfect evening for racing, 65 cars signed in for a Friday night of action at Wagner Speedway, presented by Juffer, Inc and Brecke Pest Control.

The Roth Custom Farming Hobby Stock division saw a teenager, in his Wagner Speedway debut, show the rest of the field why they call him “The Rowena Rocket!” Landon Krohn (Rowena, SD) started eighth in his first visit to the track and he wasted no time in making it memorable. Once he took the lead, he was able to social distance himself from Matt Goth (Huron, SD) who finished second. Logan Fitzpatrick (Sioux Falls, SD) would settle for third, as Nate DeSive (O’Neill, NE) and Tori Wendell (Naper, NE) completed the top five. Krohn was also the hard charger, moving up seven spots to the win, while two other drivers moved up six spots each, Logan Fitzpatrick and Joey Jaton (Wagner, SD). Heat races were won by Matt Goth and Cassy Cooper (Mitchell, SD).

The Ponca Valley Seeds Sport-Mods saw a driver that has been good enough for much of the season to be in victory lane, but lady luck would not allow it, until Friday. Wes Hochstein (Randolph, NE) has been consistently competitive, but little things have kept the checkered flag out of reach. On this night though, patience and a little good luck, brought him from his fourth starting spot to the top, withstanding challenges from point leader Dudley Schroeder, Jr (Armour, SD) to pick up win number one of 2020. Schroeder, Jr would settle for second, followed by Dale Ricks, Jr (Boyden, IA), Kendall McCarthy (Naper, NE) and Brian Shutt (Atkinson, NE). Dudley Schroeder, Jr was the hard charger, moving up four spots and heat races were won by Dale Ricks, Jr and Dyllan Ricks (Boyden, IA).

The special guests at the track on Friday night were the T & R Contracting Late Model Street Stocks and their feature event was arguably the best feature event of the season. From the drop of the green flag, the leader of the event was never more then 10 feet away from a challenger. J.J. Zabell (Parker, SD) began the event as the top gun, but eventually gave way to John Hoing (Hartford, SD). Hoing, Zach Olivier (Sioux Falls, SD) and Billy Prouty (Alexandria, SD) would wage a battle that folks will be talking about for a long time. The final eight laps of the event would become the Hoing/Prouty show. With Hoing holding on by a thread, running the top line, Prouty was putting on extreme pressure on the low side of the track. Much of this duel would be carried out side by side, until one small mistake by Hoing. As he ever so slightly slipped up the track in turn two, Prouty saw the opportunity and took advantage. Prouty would go on to win his second straight LMSS feature event in the series and his second in a row in the class at Wagner. Prouty was also the top mover, advancing four spots, and heat races were won by Zach Olivier and Tim Dann (Hartford, SD).

When the Butte Implement B-Mods showed up, it was Camden Myers (Ethan, SD) wasting not time getting to the front and picking up his third win of the season. As he left the competition in his dust, Wade Wright (Ravinia, SD) was able to outlast a wild battle with Tyler Myers (Alexandria, SD) to finish second and third respectively. Kyle Pecena (O’Neill, NE) would be the hard charger, moving up six spots to finish fourth and Logan Kafka (Wagner, SD) would round out the top five. Heats were won by Logan Kafka and Wade Wright.

The C & B Operations of Wagner Late Models would be next, and point leader Doug Tomka (Stanton, NE), started third and waited. As he was in hot pursuit of Brad Vogt (Pierce, NE) and Gale Vogt (Yankton, SD), both drivers slid up the raceway in turns one and two. That was the opening Tomka needed, as he drove by on the bottom of the track, and raced away to his fourth win of the season. Brad Vogt would settle for second and Gale Vogt took third. Mike Babcock (Creighton, NE) and Jared Hoerle (Chambers, NE) would complete the top five. Doug Tomka and Brad Vogt were the winners of the heat races.

The final event of the evening would be the DK Flooring and Custom 305 sprint cars and it would begin with a frightening crash in turn one on the start. John Otte (Ravinia, SD) would get too high on the track, went off the speedway awkwardly and went for a wild ride. When the 9er7 came to a stop, he and his chariot were in the fence of the parking lot of the rodeo grounds, nearly 50 yards away from the racetrack. MedStar Race Rescue, Tyndall Ambulance and Wagner Fire Department crews were immediately on the scene, neutralized the fuel that had leaked from the car and got John out of the car safely. John would be okay, but the car itself was severely damaged and John’s evening would be complete. Once the race resumed, Jared Jansen (Sioux Falls, SD) would repeat his victory from a week ago. Jansen started third and made a bold move in turns three and four, splitting two cars to move up into position, then the lead shortly thereafter. Jesse Lindberg (Sioux Falls, SD) would finish a strong second, followed by Daniel Nekolite (O’Neill, NE), Rick Pendergast (Norfolk, NE) and Daniel Frickel (Atkinson, NE). Nekolite and Frickel would each move up four spots to be the hard chargers, with Jesse Lindberg and John Otte winning heat races.

Next week’s action will feature 305 Sprint Cars, Late Models, B-Mods, SportMods, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. For complete results, point standings, news and more, see wagnerspeedway.com or keep up to date on Facebook at The All New Wagner Speedway.
