Second grade students from Andes Central Elementary spent the month of January strengthening ties between their school and the local community through visits to Lake Andes Nursing Home.
On January 14, Mrs. Deurmier and Mrs. Miller took the class to the nursing home to share their reading abilities. Students brought smiles to residents’ faces as they shared their favorite books and practiced their reading skills by reading aloud. The residents enjoyed listening to the stories, and students gained confidence while learning the joy of giving their time to others.
The visits continued on January 28 when Mrs. Deurmier and Mrs. Johnson took the class for their next visit. The students shared in on the fun of creating arts and crafts alongside the residents.
Their hands-on activities encouraged conversation, creativity, and meaningful connections between generations. Laughter and friendly conversations filled the room as students and residents worked together.
Both visits were enjoyed by everyone involved and highlighted the importance of school and community involvement. One resident told Mrs. Deurmier how therapeutic our visits were for him, while others expressed multiple thank-yous and asked us to come back. Experiences like these help students learn empathy, kindness, and the value of serving others, while bringing joy and companionship to community members.
Andes Central Elementary is proud to provide opportunities that connect students with their community and create lasting memories for all.
