Rotary News
Wagner Rotary Club came to order last Wednesday, October 18th at the Rotary Building formerly known as Piroutek Insurance and before that it was First State Bank. Just a little information for history buffs who are reading this and for those who live out of town and have memories of Wagner Main Street.
Pastor/Rotarian Bill Heermann offered up a prayer for the fall weather we have been enjoying, the beautiful colors of fall, and for our Steak meeting and the hands that prepared it. Delicious steaks were served courtesy of Super Foods by Rotarian Scott McAdaragh and his mother Gerri. Gerri provides us with a delicious dessert every Wednesday also.
Song leader Gerrit Juffer was back in attendance after a Rotary Exchange trip to India with his wife Michelle. Gerrit led us in two verses of “Clementine.”
There were two Senior student guests from the Wagner Community School present for the meeting. They were Owen Bekanich whose guardian is his grandmother Susan Gullickson. Owen is seriously considering a career in the National Guard as well as enlisting in the Army and possibly also Mitchell Vo tech to go along with his Guard involvement. Christian Doom was also present, and his parents are Chris and Angel Doom. Christian’s favorite class is physics, and he is considering attending a technical school such as Mitchell VoTech to specialize in Power Sports.
Rotarian Ken Cotton delivered his Membership Minute on Classifications. Membership in Rotary is based upon a “classification.” Basically, this describes the distinct and recognized business or professional service which the Rotarian renders to society in general. This is determined by activities or services rather than “a position”. Classification is a necessary concept in assuring that each Rotary club represents a cross section of the business and professional service of the community.
Sergeant at Arms Jamie Soukup had been very busy scribbling in his notebook and he delivered several fines: $2 to Rachel Woods for killing a wasp that was at our meeting last week; $2 to Amanda Bechen for calling Rachel ‘”Momma Rachel”; $2 to Craig Krsnak for announcing last week that he does not like cocoanut; $2 to Gerrit Juffer for coming back from his trip; $2 to Jeff Doom for confusing everyone in the Rotary Group Text prior to the meeting; $2 to Jerry Weber who was talking Bowling to Rachel Woods; $2 to Craig Krsnak for spilling gravy on all the bills he handed out; $2 to Jordan Weber for being late to the meeting; and $3 to Jamie Soukup for forgetting the meeting. The meeting referred to was the Board of Directors meeting that was held before the regular meeting.
Happy Fines were $2 from Gerrit Juffer that USD is having a “Game Day”, $7 from Linda Soukup who was happy to celebrate her birthday for the entire last week with her family; $2 to Amanda Bechen who suffered a fall and was happy to have all “her teeth”; $2 from Patty Frei who was relieved and happy to have her two dogs back.
Pastor/Rotarian Bill Heermann held the winning ticket number and tried to find the Queen of Hearts in the deck, but she is still elusive. He missed winning $197.00.
Secretary Krsnak announced that everyone is being serious about the attendance race and the Juffer Team has 3 misses and the Frei Team only has 1 miss to date.
There are no regular programs given on Steak Day. Miscellaneous items are discussed, and plans made. President Brunsing gave information on the Board meeting held prior to our regular meeting. The District Conference recently held in Yankton South Dakota has requested that clubs be more proactive in several areas and on of those areas was that clubs need to appoint a member to oversee recruiting students for the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) from our club. Rotarian Jamie Soukup volunteered for the position. Brunsing also stated that she has been working on a formula to raise funds to sponsor these youth for the leadership camp.
It was also decided to buy a banner which has the Rotary Four-Way Test printed on it for public display so that visitors can recite the test along with the Rotarians. We use this recitation as the way to end our weekly meetings.
Rotarian Patty Frei spoke briefly about World Polio Day next week on Tuesday, October 24th. The membership decided to meet at 5:30 on that afternoon at Wagner Lake and walk a mile around the lake. Eradicating Polio worldwide is an important Rotary objective. Sadly, there are a few cases yet in the United States.
President Brunsing asked for volunteers for a Membership Committee and Bill and Patty Frei volunteered as Bill is already an Assistant District Governor for our region in District 5610. Rotarian Rachel Woods is going to be the Public Image person for our club. If you are a member of Facebook, be sure to search for our information which Rachel posts weekly. We want to get our information to as many people as possible and not everyone subscribes to our newspaper.
We then adjourned our Four-0Way Test which is known as the Four Pillars of Rotary. Of all the things we think, say, or do: Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all Concerned?
