Patty F. did online Rotary grant training. There was discussion of various possible projects Rotarians could sponsor with grant monies. Application deadline is July 3, receiving funds the end of September.
Program chair, Jerry H., introduced his last minute program, Roger W., since his previous program was unable to attend. Roger W. discussed Zebra muscles found in lakes, rivers, etc. They originally came from Russia, the Ukraine. They are a “D” shaped clam shell with stripes and very sharp edges that can attach themselves, specifically to water craft, etc. They can cause incredible problems: clogging, etc. He recommends that folks wash their boats/trailers down and leave the water craft to dry out 3 to 4 days before putting back in the water. We need to be aware and knowledgeable of some of the invasive species: Florida Everglades – pythons; snake head fish in the South. Roger was able to get a lot of information from Mike Reiner of the Game, Fish & Parks Dept. Are these Zebra muscles in SD? Yes. For example, the entire Missouri River – south of Gavins Point Dam are infected. Nothing can really be done about zebra muscles, we just need to be careful and aware!
With no other business brought forward, we closed in our usual fashion by singing “America (My Country ‘Tis of Thee)” and meeting was adjourned.
