Remembering and Honoring MICHAEL M. KIRWAN

T Sgt Michael M. Kirwan was born on March 18, 1969 to Mike and Willa Kirwan. He grew up in the Ft. Randall area on his parents' farm. Following his 1987 graduation from Andes Central High School, he enlisted in the Air Force.

Following basic training at Lackland AFB TX, Kirwan attended hydraulic and crew chief training for the B-52, B-1 and KC/ EC/RC-135 at Sheppard AFB, TX and Ellsworth AFB. SD.

Kirwan was selected for C-130 and C-5 flight engineer school in 1988. Following training at Altus AFB, OK and Hurlburt Field, FL, he was assigned on the AC-130 Spectre gunship. Its primary missions are close air support, air interdiction and armed reconnaissance.

While assigned to Air Force Special Operations between 1989 and 1993, Kirwan served on temporary duty assignments in over 60 countries worldwide and flew many combat missions during Desert Storm.

He served in Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Desert Calm from 1990 to 1992, and was based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, Thumrait, Oman and at the Kuwait International Airport.

Following the First Persian Gulf War, Kirwan was diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder. He spent three year (1993-1996) at Wilford Hall Medical Center before receiving a medical waiver.

He returned to his flight engineer duties and served as a flight engineer and flight mechanic aboard General Valsillio's T-43 727 aircraft.

Kirwan was medially retired from the Air Force in December 1999. Following retirement, kirwan completed college and worked for the Army Corps of Engineers on the Big Bend Dam. He later worked as a Power System dispatcher for Western Area Power Administration in Watertown.

Micky and Julie Krcil were married May 25, 2996 they have 3 children, Connor Kerson and Cassidy.

Micky passed away from his war wounds Nov. 24, 2017.
