10 YEARS AGO

Snow fall greeted the first week of the year before the temperatures are going to drop with expected highs in the single digits. Justin Boyle and Jacob Ratzlaff enjoyed the snow as they dug a tunnel this past week.

The Avon Lions Club is sponsoring a pancake/sausage meal on January 10.

TheAvonPiratesfelltoAlcester-Hudson31-56.BradyCameron and Jacob Cihak led the scoreboard with 8 points each.

The Lady Pirates suffered loss at Corn Palace to Ethan. Lauren Sees led the scoreboard with 11 points and 4 steals, Heidi Cap had 10 points and 10 rebounds and Cheylee Nagel had 6 rebounds.

35 YEARS AGO

1991

There will be some special games played on Saturday night at the Avon gym. The girls basketball team will take on their fathers followed by Radio KKLS who will play the school staff.

The Ozark Country Campbell’s Jubilee will be playing Jan. 12th at the Avon Gym.

Many visitors were in the Avon area over the holidays.

56 YEARS AGO

1970

Gordon Davis was named Chamber President with Ray Weber as Vice Pres.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Johnson, Sr. were honored on their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

KennyandScottCrouse,ClaytonFillaus,andJackFriedel were fishing at Big Stone Lake.

There will be an Auction Sale on Jan. 8th for the Ben Bertus, estate.

The Pirates start the year with 2 wins, 61-46 over Tyndall and 58-48 over Springfield.

85 YEARS AGO

1941

Jake Koehn suffered a broken leg when a cow kicked him.

R. W. Griffith is sporting a new DeSoto with all the trimmings.

Little Rosalee Hornstra, daughter of Neil and Lillian, had the misfortune of being scalded when she reached up to a table and tipped a dish pan of hot water over her arms. Her injuries are quite serious. The Avon Community Theater is showing, “The Saint Takes Over”. All admission is ten cents.

109 YEARS AGO

1917

There have been many in our community with the grippe and colds.

A family reunion was held at the Cap Steckler home on Christmas day.

C.F. Doren sold a horse to a Yankton buyer. Mr. M. Schaefena and Miss Alice Bakker were married Christmas Day. They will live near Springfield.
