National Police Week is observed this year on May 15th through May 21st. This is a week that offers honor, remembrance, and peer support for police officers. Police officers deserve to be honored and recognized for their dedication and hard work for their communities. Police Chief, Theodore Smith, is the lone officer of theAvonPoliceDepartment. Police Chief Smith has been in his current position for almost seven months in Avon. What Chief Smith enjoys most about being a part of law enforcement is the opportunity that the job allows him to make a difference in the community. Smith’s grandfather was the Chief of Police in Sturgis while Smith was growing up. Listening to his grandfather’s experiences as a police officer and chief stirred an interest in Smith. Smith also has his own personal training and experienceinlawenforcement from his training while in the National Guard. These are the top two reasons that Smith chose a career in law enforcement.

Smith most enjoys the people and community that he is a part of now that he is the Chief of Police for Avon. The people here are so welcoming and kind that it has made Smith’s job smooth and enjoyable. The most challenging part of the job for Smith would probably be being the only member of the police department. He hastocoordinatehislifeand schedulearoundwhatisbest needed to be effective for the residents of Avon.

Thank you, Police Chief Smith, for your hard work and dedication to the Avon community.
