By
Randall Powers is the son of Dennis and April Powers. He wrestled in the heavyweight class and is currently a sophomore at Avon High School. Randall is relatively new to the wrestling scene and has only been wrestling for two years. Powers decided to start wrestling after being encouraged by wrestling parents and other wrestlers. During Randall’s wrestling career, he has had a lot of help and inspiration from Travis Tjeerdsma, the father of one of his teammates, Travis, and Brad Bierema, Powers’ football coach. When asked what he enjoys most about wrestling, Randall said that it was being able to spend time with his friends every weekend at tournaments. Powers’ favorite wrestling move is the chicken wing. Randall’s career highlights thus far in his high school wrestling career have been placing in the top three the last two years at the state duals tournament. Drinking an energy drink and listening to music is how Randall would get prepared for a wrestling meet. The most challenging match for Randall this season was going up against the defending state champion. Randall’s highlight of the 2023- 2024 wrestling season was winning a match at the state wrestling tournament. Powers won in the consolation round one over Jacob Johnson from Viborg-Hurley/Irene-Wakonda 30-22. To prepare for the 2023-2024 wrestling season, Randall lifted weights and played football in the offseason. For Randall, the hardest part about being a wrestler were the practices. Randall ends his sophomore season with a win-loss record of 25-15. Randall would like to thank the parents of his teammates, his teammates, his family and the community for all of their support during this and previous wrestling seasons.
