RAIDERS START SEASON WITH A 50-0 WIN
Wagner Raiders football team traveled to play Lakota Tech this past Saturday. Wagner outscored Lakota Tech 50-0 for the win.
Dustin Honomichl had a tremendous performance going 11/11 for 240 yards throwing 4 touchdowns (Chris Nelson, Nolan Dvorak, Riley Roberts and Glenn Cournoyer), and rushing for 49 yards and 2 more touchdowns. Chris Nelson added 2 more rushing touchdowns for his teammates. The offensive effort amassed 341 yards on 33 offensive plays. Dustin did a great job dispersing the ball to 6 different receivers in a short game. Let's not forget, these offensive accomplishments all start up front with the offensive line.
Leading the defense was Riley Robert with 5 tackles. Nolan Dvorak, Chris Nelson and Glenn Cournoyer each accumulated 4 tackles, on the day. Brennan Leines did a great job working in the opponent’s backfield recording 2 sacks on the day. Matt Link and Gannon Knebel each added an interception for the defensive unit.
Special teams had 3 great punt returns for an average of 24.6 yards.
With this being the first game, I wanted to make sure our starters played the majority of the game. There is always room for improvement, even for the starters, and game experience is what we need. When we become better at what we are doing, we will be able to substitute earlier in the game. Junior High and JV games are where younger players will earn your stripes.
Our next game is Saturday at Bennet County.
I would also like to congratulate Lakota Tech for starting a football program. That takes a tremendous amount courage and commitment. Congratulations Lakota Tech.
