RAIDERS ROLL PAST CLASS B RUNNERS-UP BEHIND KOUPAL’S MONSTER DOUBLE-DOUBLE

By

The Lady Raiders made a statement Tuesday night, traveling to Woonsocket to take on the defending Class B runner-up Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks and coming away with an impressive 51-41 victory.

The Blackhawks, who returned a strong nucleus from last year’s runner-up squad and entered the contest with a 13-3 record, struck first with a quick 5-0 run. But the Raiders wasted little time responding. Wagner erupted for 24 first-quarter points, turning an early deficit into a commanding 24-9 lead by the end of the opening frame.

The Raiders kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter, stretching the advantage to 3515 and silencing the home crowd.

To their credit, the Blackhawks battled back in the second half, trimming the deficit to as few as eight points. However, they could get no closer as the Raiders stayed composed down the stretch to secure the 10-point win.

Leading the charge once again was Ashlyn Koupal, who delivered a dominant performance with 36 points, 18 rebounds, and four assists to record another double-double. Hannah Holzbauer and Braxton Nedved each chipped in six points. Holzbauer added five rebounds and two assists, while Nedved pulled down five boards of her own.

Hayden Knudsen contributed two points and four rebounds, and Ravyn Medricky rounded out the scoring with one point while grabbing six rebounds.

The Raiders controlled the glass all night, outrebounding the Blackhawks 39-24. Wagner shot 17-of-45 from the field (38 percent), while the Blackhawks finished 17-of-54 (32 percent). The Raiders committed 17 turnovers compared to 11 for Sanborn Central/Woonsocket.

With the win, Wagner showed it can compete with — and defeat — one of Class B’s top contenders, using a fast start and dominance on the boards to seal a hard-fought road victory.
