Wagner’s Post 11 Legion team played host to the White Caps of Platte-Geddes on Thursday, July 13, looking to avenge an earlier 7-0 loss.
Carter Cournoyer was the starting pitcher for Wagner. He only went 4.2 innings in this contest as we were looking to keep him fresh for the region tournament coming up this week in Tabor. Carter would give up two earned runs on three hits while walking one and striking out four.
Carter left the game as Wagner held a 5-2 advantage. The offense got going early for the home team as they scored five runs on three hits and five walks.
Frank Soukup relieved Carter and kept the Caps at bay through the 6th inning. He ran into trouble in the 7th as two hits and a walk would load the bases.
The decision was then made to bring in Carlin Hopkins to shut the door. He had a good outing on Sunday and he would get the job done again on this day. He did walk the first batter he faced after the count went full to trim the lead to two. The next batter then lined out to center fielder Daniel Soukup to drive in another run and put runners at second and third. But all was well once he threw strike three past the final Platte-Geddes hitter to preserve the 5-4 victory.
Wagner’s bats were quiet after the first inning. Keegan McAdaragh had two singles on the day while Pesicka and Carter Cournoyer each had one.
Wagner’s region tournament will begin on Tuesday, July 18, with a 2:00 game against Parkston.
