The Avon Pirates hit the road Friday night to take on the Freeman Phoenix, where they suffered a tough 8–58 loss. In the opening quarter Trent Soukup powered in a 3-yard touchdown run and added the two-point conversion to tie up the scoreboard 8-8, but Freeman however, answered quickly to end the first quarter ahead 14–8. The Pirates were held scoreless in the second quarter as Freeman extended its lead to have the scoreboard for Avon 8-22 at the half. The Phoenix defense controlled the game in the second half, shutting down Avon’s offense while adding multiple scores to end the game with Avon down 8-58. Soukup led the Pirate offense with 67 rushing yards and one touchdown. Additional rushing contributions came from Cale Cooper with 34 yards, Weston Bierema 20, Easton Sees 7, Treyvan Talsma 4, and Grayson Ratzlaff 1 yard. On defense, Al’Shamon Gunter led the team with six tackles and two assists. Grayson Ratzlaff and B. Tolsma each recorded two tackles and one assist, while Zander Fathke, Jamie Pelton, and B. Fathke each tallied two tackles. G. Maggs and Dominic Doom added one tackle apiece. Despite the loss, the Pirates showed strong effort against the tough Freeman Phoenix. This loss brings the team record to 6-2. Avon will host Oldham-Ramona-Rutland in the 1st Round of High School Football Playoffs on Thursday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m.
