10 Years Ago – 2014
Pickstown held its ribbon cutting ceremony at its museum dedication. Speakers for the event included Tom Brokaw, Col. Joel Cross and Lt. Governor Matt Michels.
Derik Rolston graduated from the SD Law Enforcement Training Academy as a 911 certified dispatcher.
The Lake Andes classes of 1936 to the present reunion was held.
The Breen on the Green event was held. There were 27 teams present with all proceeds going to the Pink Ladies.
1st place winners of the Fish Days Volleyball Tournament were Shanon Chytka, Katie Gall, Logon Holien and David Gall of Pickstown with a team from Spencer, NE taking home second place.
The demolition derby results include 1st place Jarod Star of Corsica, 2nd place Andy Kok of Geddes and 3rd place was Mike Johnson of Lake Andes.
20 Years Ago – 2004
Daniel Evans, head football and track coach at Centerville School was awarded a 25 Year Coaching Award at the South Dakota State Track Meet in Sioux Falls.
Incumbent Carroll V. “Red Allen” kept his position as County Commissioner District II after defeating his opponent.
Tim and Melissa Flor announced the birth of their son.
Gerri Hart and Eric Olson announced the birth of their daughter.
Jill Marie Denker and Kelly Joe Wells were united in marriage.
30 Years Ago – 1994
Diane Westendorf and Dwight Van Zee were married.
The Episcopal Church in South Dakota will consecrate its first-ever Native American diocesan bishop, the Reverend Creighton L. Robertson at the Lake Andes pow-wow grounds.
40 Years Ago - 1984
Mons Aase celebrated his 90th birthday.
Nellie Carda was honored at a surprise birthday party.
Jens Nielsen celebrated his 101st birthday and Maggie Baker her 96th birthday.
50 Years Ago – 1974
Construction started on the new Charles-Mix County Law Enforcement Center.
Work has begun on the construction of the new nursing home.
Joe LaBarge, who defeated Platte five times last year, did it again as the hard throwing right hander limited Platte to six hits.
Jay Antonne was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kirwan.
Amy Lynn was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Trchka.
60 Years Ago – 1964
Miss Mary Jane Francis Pesicka became the bride of A/2c Charles Keater Ives Jr.
Lila Leonard was crowned the 1964 Fish Days Queen by the 1963 Queen Vicki Hamik.
Bruce and Lynn Stedronsky won first in the Kid’s Parade.
The Lake Andes ball club defeated Burke in Missouri Valley League 12-9. Louis Otte was the leading hitter for the Lake Andes Lakers, getting four hits in five times at bat. Pitching for Lake Andes was Terry Carda and catching, Red Allen.
Showing at the Ft. Randall Autovue Drive-In Theater was “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” and “55 Days at Peking Sea” On sale at Nick’s regular size Coke or 7-up, 6 pack- 29 cents plus deposit, and 100% pure ground beef, 3 pounds for $1.00.
80 Years Ago – 1944
The Club Café, owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Paulson, closed its doors after four years.
Reverend Virgil Bjerke will be installed at the East Lake Andes Lutheran Church. He will also be the pastor at the West Lutheran Church.
90 Years Ago – 1934
The Fairmont Creamery moved to the newly remodeled building next to Skinner’s jewelry store.
Many farmers have been forced to take their cattle to other areas for feed, due to the extreme heat and lack of moisture.
Five car loads of “hopper” poison has been delivered to the station and those who have used it report good results.
