10 Years Ago – 2014

Candidates running for the 2014 Fish Days Queen Pageant are Cybil Chytka, Dimera Dvorak, Jacie Braun, Taylor Gray, Sydney Myears, Mikayla Petsche and Maren Collins.

Sydney Dvorak became a member of the American Angus Association.

Gene Niehus and DesaRae Gravatt participated in a sheriff’s candidates forum.

Andes Central had five athletes qualify for the state track meet. They included Payton Johanneson in high jump and triple jump; Erica Kitchenmaster in the 100- and 200-meter dash; Joey Evans in the triple jump; Aaron Swanson in the high jump; and Darrin Hopkins in discus.

Payton Johanneson placed 2nd in high jump and Erica Kitchenmaster placed 4th in both the 100 meter and 200-meter dash.

20 Years Ago – 2004

Candidates for the 2004 Fish Days Queen Contest include Katrina Brooks, Desiree Bruguier, Brandi Gravatt, DesaRae Gravatt, Desarae Jones, Jodi Park and Valeriah Vasek.

Joseph Matuska was recognized by Governor Mike Rounds for his Academic Excellence at a banquet in Pierre.

Candidates for the Ms. Bullhead and Mr. Carp contest include JoDelle Ferguson, Jill Laska, Rod Payer, Jason Laska, DennisEvansandDawnWaters.

40 Years Ago – 1984

An open house was held in honor of Wayne Nelsen on his retirement from the Post Office.

Lindy LeNae was born to Don and Janice Hotchkiss.

Duane Myears, Mark Payer, Susan Carda and Forrest Weeg placed at the State Track meet.

Mark Payer and Jon Carda were named Most Valuable players for the 1984 track season.

Daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. William Mulder, Mr. and Mrs. Don Pelton, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Brown, Mr. and Mrs. John Brooks, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Terry Vogt.

Sons were born to Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Price and Mr. and Mrs. Dean Fuhrer.

Diane Sorenson and Kendall Wiechmann were married.

50 Years Ago – 1974

Sam Holderby placed fifth in the 440-yard dash and Todd Payer placed fifth in the 100-yard dash at the State Track meet.

60 Years Ago – 1964

Businessmen and REA crew erected a new bill board sign for Lake Andes across Ft. Randall Dam in Gregory County. The 8 x 16 ft. sign was painted by Jim Hansen of Lake Andes for the Chamber of Commerce. The black outline of the letters reflect light so the sign can be seen by night drivers.

Six school records were broken during the track season this year. The school held their first Conference and fourth regional. Records were set by Jim Haber mile run and 880-yard run; Dan Pipes, broad jump; Bob Lewis, pole vault; Dennis Chytka, discus; Joel Steinmark Walt Jones, Dennis Chytka and Don Cihak in the relay.

Fred Elridge was named valedictorian of the graduating class of Lake Andes High School. Salutatorians were Walter Jones, Sherry Petrik and Margaret Williamson.

Karen Raabe was valedictorian of Ravinia High School. Salutatorian was Betty Birger.

80 Years Ago – 1944

Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Martinec are the parents of a daughter.
