110 years Ago – 2014

Mary Jo Parker was named the new Head Librarian for the Lake Andes Public Library.

DiMera Dvorak was awarded the Presidential Scholarship to Dakota Wesleyan University during its annual Presidential Scholarship Day in February.

Senior Spotlights featured Christopher Dvorak and Jacie Braun.

Andes Central wrestlers that wrestled at the State B Tournament included Leo Hopkins at 120 pounds (placing 3rd), Tre’zen Doren at 285 poundsandZachRucktaeschel at 132 pounds.

20 Years Ago – 2004

Twelve Dakota Wesleyan University students were selected by their classmates as candidates for Scotchman and Miss Wesleyan. Included was Heather Hall of Wagner/ Lake Andes.

Haar Implement celebrated their 50-year anniversary in conjunction with John Deere Day at the National Guard Armory.

The new Visitor Contact Center enroute to North Point at Pickstown is nearing completion.

Marty Indian School Middle School students placed second in the Build Your boat contest as part of the Gifted and Talented Conference and Contest held at Rapid City.

40 Years Ago – 1984

Mary E. Dvorak was honored on her 80th Birthday.

Ed Bures received several company awards at the annual Life Investors awards banquet. One of the awards was for outstanding sales in the first three months following training school.

50 Years Ago – 1974

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Otte.

60 Years Ago – 1964

While final arrangements are incomplete, indications are that Lake Andes will again have a Main Street Café. Mr. Ed Jones, former businessman of this city, is in the process of readying a building for a café.

First place winners in the County Spelling Bee included first grade. Gregg Kietzmann, East Howard 33; Mary Lunn Kramer, Lake Andes Ind; and Mary Jane Kirwan, seventh grader from Pickstown.

The Marty Mission Braves won third place in the State Catholic Tournament at Sioux Falls.

70 Years Ago – 1954 Frank Novotny was named a director of the East River Electric Power Cooperative, Madison, representing Charles-Mix Electric Cooperative.

Dr. Leslie Lewis arrived to take up the work of past of the First Presbyterian Church.

Second Anniversary specials at Milt’s Market: sweet peas, Golden Valley 303 can, ten cents; frozen strawberries, snow crop 27 cents; Del Monte orange juice, 46 oz can, 29 cents; and Bake-Rite Shortening, 3 lb. can 69 cents.

Mayor Wm. Wuest pulled the switch turning on the new street lights in Lake Andes.

80 Years Ago – 1944

Sgt. Asa y. Crow, son of Mrs. Rachel Crow of Ravinia, has won the right to war the right to wear the world-famous Wings and Boots of the United States Volunteer Paratrooper, World War II’s most feared warrior.

90 Years Ago – 1934

The M & L Apparel Shop, opening Saturday in the Tipton building by the George Marcus stores of Geddes and Lake Andes, was visited and generously patronized by the women of this and surrounding communities. Madames John J. Exon and Mabel Henry are in charge at the store.

100 Years Ago – 1924 The stork was pretty busy in this vicinity the past week, leaving a baby girl at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Olsen; a boy at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kozak; and a son at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Lokken.

110 Years Ago – 1914 Mrs. Sam Johnson entertained about 15 of her lady friends at her home with a Washington birthday party.

John Henning has installed a feed grinder in his feed and flour she and will keep all kind of ground feed for sale.

H.J. Oversmith has assumed his duties as assistant postmaster.

Albert Johnson and wife moved their household goods down from Platte the first of the week. They have rented the Harding farm, just east of town.
