10 Years Ago – 2014

The Andes Central elementary student council made a donation of $250 each to the Lake Andes Health Care Center residents, Dakota Senior Meals Program and the Fort Randall Pink Ladies. The student council sold Christmas gift bags and healthy snacks to raise the money for their donations.

Andes Central School District recognized and thanked the AC School Board members for their hard work and dedication. Members included Debbie Houseman, Julie Stirling, Nicole Gray, Terry Svatos, Ardie Lantz, Kristin Dvorak, and Tammy Swanson.

The Fort Randall Casino and Hotel hosted the 4th Annual Tribal Transportation Safety Summit. This summit offered South Dakota’s nine tribes an opportunity to get together and share transportation safety information.

Sheriff Randy Thaler announced his plans to run for a second term.

20 Years Ago- 2004

A fire destroyed the homes of three families in Lakeview Colony.

A son, Gordon, was born to Gordon Shields Jr. and Savannah Holiday.

30 Years Ago – 1994

Pam Wells became the new administrator at the Lake Andes Health Care Center.

Christine Amell and Matthew Mahan announced their engagement.

Wrestlers placing in the Platte Round Robin Tournament were John Stirling, champion at 171 lbs; Matt Carda, champion at 189 lbs; Dustin Longe, runner-up at 145 lbs; and Chad Nielsen, runner-up at 140 lbs.

50 Years Ago – 1974

Carole Hamik and Dean Nasser announced their engagement.

Mary Jo Donovan was named Andes Central’s Betty Crocker Family Leader of Tomorrow.

Debra Martinec won the local spelling contest and will represent Andes central at the Argus Leader spelling contest in March.

Mike Ridgeway placed second in the state Elk Association Leadership contest. Ridgway also won the District VII American Legion Oratorical contest at Pickstown.

The engagement of Janet Dahlgren and Bill Evans was announced.

60 Years Ago – 1964

Jacqueline Kay was born to Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Bechen.

Mr. George Padrnos and Mr. George Schekel were honored at a retirement party held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Nelson.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald Walker were honored at an anniversary party at the Leonard Schrank home. Mr. and Mrs. Walker were married in 1942.

A party was held for Mrs. Johanna Minehan in honor of her 78th birthday.

Moe Shevlin’s Marty Mission Braves defeated Stephan in the State Catholic Indian Tournament in Rapid City.

70 Years Ago – 1954

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hodge.

Seniors on the honor roll at Ravinia are James Davies, Dale Hall, Beryle Johnson, Bonnie Martin, Mary Ann Morrow, Russell Sorenson, Lynn Twist and Richard Uecker.

The Lake Andes Lakers won their fourth game when they downed Winner 75-59 with Jack Ecklund’s 22 points topping the Andes crew. Max Becker picked up 16 for Lake Andes and Harry Prendergast with 18 and Baltus Fritzmeier’s defensive play was a standout.

The Lake Andes Chamber of Commerce, headed by Scott Grantham, president, is promoting a movement to endorse the plan to push Pickstown, located on the lake formed by the Fort Randall Dam, as a location for a United States Aire Force Academy.

80 Years Ago – 1944

Alice Parker and William Ellens were married.

Henry Bruing son of Mrs. John Bruing and Howard Lawrie, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Lawrie are aboard two of the biggest and most effective ships in the Pacific waters. This history of the Saratoga on which Henry is one of the crew and Enterprise where Howard is a member of the band, reads like magic.

90 Years Ago – 1934

A daughter was born Monday evening to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Kasulka.

110 Year Ago – 1914

The Steele building, two doors west of the Lakeside bank, is being wrecked and will be shipped to Meckling and erected in that city.
