50 Years Ago – 1974

The voters of Andes Central School District 103 will go to the polls to decide on the $525,000 school bond issue. The proposal, approved by the Andes Central School Board, calls for a new elementary building to be built in Lake Andes, northeast of the new athletic field. The Division of Social Welfare Offices moved to a new location at 210 Main Street. The building was formerly used as a garage, plumbing and heating business.

60 Years Ago – 1964

At least 260 bald eagles were counted on the Missouri River between Ft. Randall Dam and North Sioux City, reported Chuck Keeler, district game manager at Yankton.

70 Years Ago – 1954

A marked gain has been made by the Charles-Mix Electric Association, Inc., since its organization in 1949. Consumers have increased from 860 in 1949 to 1333, or a 55% gain, in 1953. The average kilowatts used by each farm in 1949 were 57,000, while 220,171 were consumed in 1953. The Cooperative’s total miles serviced in 1949 were 828, while total mileage is now 1,103. Grain prices furnished by Farmers Elevator: barley, no. 2, $1.00; rye no.2, $1.00; oats, no.1. 36;lb., $0.74; spring wheat, no.

1, $2.10; winter wheat, no. 1, $2.05; corn, no. 2. $1.28; white corn, $1.50. Mr. and Mrs. Jess Maruska are the proud parents of a daughter.

80 Years Ago - 1944

JohnEngellandpurchased the Lakeside bank building and plans to do extensive remodeling for the Commercial State Bank. Gasoline rations will be in effect for farmers this spring and will be based on their crop acreage to be planted. Specials at Mat’s Market were wieners $0.27 per lb; Camay Soap 3 bars for $0.19; 2 lb box of crackers was $0.32; and Grape Nuts flakes were $0.09 per box. Former residents married 50 years ago, Christa Stull and Edward L. Senn were married January 14, 1894 at the home of the bride’s parents on a homestead one mile east of Platte. She has been in Charles-Mix County since 1883 and Senn came to South Dakota in 1884. During the homestead period, he established or purchased 32 weekly newspapers in nearly every county west of the Missouri River. In 1925, when he was appointed administrator in charge of federal enforcement of prohibition in the state, serving until 1933.

90 Years Ago – 1934

A new school building was completed last week on Beebe Island located ten miles southwest of town. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Hedeen. A 1 lb can of pork and beans was $0.05; a large bottle of catsup was $0.10; powdered sugar was $0.15 for 2 lbs; macaroni 2 lbs $0.15; oranges extra-large dozen costs $0.33; bologna, per ring, $0.05; for 3 lbs of coffee cost $0.59.

110 Years Ago – 1914

Ravinia Booster- Mr. J.F. Suiter of Iona, SD has bought a half interest in his brother’s hardware store. Wheeler Courier- The “Old Muddy” is in dangerous condition for crossing and so far, this winter teams have been unable to cross on the ice. Already a number of accidents have been reported at other points on the river by foolish attempts to cross with teams.
