10 Years Ago – 2014

Local families were urged to ICE senior’s cell phones in order to keep the elderly safe when traveling in the winter weather. The Lake Andes Baseball Association in preparing for their upcoming season and was looking for new board members. At the Miller Invite, wrestlers Tre’Zen Doren won first place in the 285-pound weight class and Leo Hopkins placed third in the 120-pound weight class. Birthdays for this week were Lance Boerner, Josh Kaczor, Jackie Gall, Dawson Ronfeldt, Matthew Bryant, Connor Svatos, Cameron Svatos, Makenzie Smith and Ryan Cooney. Second graders listed on the second quarter honor perfect attendance include Riata Bultje and Abigail Svatos. Excellent Attendance was awarded to Cole Bergin, Carlin Hopkins and Claire Johnson.

20 Years Ago - 2004

Rudy Pavel retired as the custodian at the 4-H Center. Keith Mushitz was elected as the Chairman of the Charles-Mix County Board of Commissioners.

30 Years Ago – 1994

The Lake Andes City Council gathered for the first meeting of 1994, and decided to once again re-instate the one cent city sales tax by placing it on the first reading. Jack Soulek will serve as the chairman of the Charles-Mix County Board of Commissioners.

50 Years Ago – 1974

Leonard Kreeger was among the nominees for outstanding young farmer from the area. Todd Gasper celebrated his fifth birthday. Jason Donald was born to Mr. and Mrs. Donald Jaeger. Mark Edwin was born to Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Nelson.

60 Years Ago – 1964

George Padrnos retired as rural mail carrier after serving 21 years. Mr. and Mrs. William Pavlis celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. Bill McCabe was honored at a retirement party after serving 21 years of law enforcement in Charles-Mix County.

70 Years Ago – 1954

Superintendent L. F. Thomas announced that the new gold curtains for the stage had arrived. Sales of linens, blankets, towels and wash cloths reached an all-time high in 1952.

80 Years Ago – 1944

Ray VonEschen has taken over the management of the Lake Andes and Wagner offices of the N.W. Bell Telephone Company and Neil Houlihan for the many years of the Geddes and Lake Andes districts will have charge of the Platte and Geddes office. Showing at the O.K. Theatre “Paris After Dark,” “Death Valley Manhattan,” Happy Land,” with Ameche, Frances Dee, Harold Carey and Andy Rutherford and “the Ghost of Frankenstein”. Mrs. J.J. Matejousky surprised her mother, Mrs. Martha K. Trystad on her 83rd birthday by inviting the nearby neighbors for the afternoon. The stiffest part of the water tapered down to a much milder register and the light snow disappeared.

A large flock of wild geese flew over Bovee, a rather rare event for January.

100 Years Ago - 1924

E.O. Otto and Miss May Sherman were united in marriage and drove to Ravinia where they took the morning passenger to Homer, NE where they would make their future home. January 10th, 1924 was a thirty below zero Saturday morning.

110 Years Ago -1914

Charles Vesley had disposed his interest in the Stedronsky Brothers Hardware Store in the city and the first of February would take charge of the Farmer’s Elevator.
