1961 - 60 Years Ago

Ed Krell was elected chairman of the mayor's city recreation committee as it contemplated a broader recreation program in Lake Andes this summer at its organizational meeting Friday night.

This area was in danger from simulated nuclear bombings at Omaha and Pierre. Had it been real, there might have been some radioactive fall-out locally. Under the direction of County CD Director, Floyd Reed, the entire town of Pickstown was evacuated. A convoy of 65 cars, carrying an estimated 250-300 persons, moved rapidly and orderly to grounds of a rural church three miles east of Pickstown. With Pickstown residents prepared to co-operate, the entire evacuation took only about 15 minutes.

1951- 70 Years Ago

The Senior Class Play, "The First Year," a comic tragedy of married life will be given next Tuesday. The following Seniors are in the cast: Virginia Smith, Helen Jerman, Carl Cassidy, Arthur Kirschenmann, George Kane, Harry Winters, Stephanie Cowling, Alice Jones and Henry Bach.

The Junior-Senior banquet will be held in the Bach Hotel May 15 carrying out the "Ship" idea. Marion Miller is to give the Senior class "will" and Ellen Jones the Junior class prophecy.

Russell Nelson was absent from school Monday.

Mrs. A. J. Cassidy received word that her essay had been declared the best in the state and was sent to the general federation committee were it will compete with essays from each of the other states.

1931 - 90 Years Ago

Because of lack of patronage the Columbian, fast train over the Milwaukee via Sioux City and Mitchell was abandoned last week after a two month trial, and was re-routed through the Twin Cities as here-to-fore. A local train will make the route and all connections between Sioux City and Aberdeen.

The mayor and council named city officers for next year. J. F. Nichols, city auditor; Zachariasen Bros., Street commissioners; Jakob Skvaril, park superintendent; and E. O. Lanam, city assessor. President of the Council is Geo. J. Schekell; G.W. Ransdall, finance; G. J. Schekel, waterworks; J. J. Jones, lights, telephone and sewer; John Becker, city buildings; F. J. Sellers, sidewalks and parks; and H. E. Bengtson, streets and alleys.
