Work continues on the new RCWD building in Lake Andes. Last week's moderate temperatures helped workers keep a steady pace.

Winners of the KC Free throw contest were: Jason Laska, Harry Rouse, Ron Knudsen, Ryan Bruguier, Brent Silk, Jill Laska, Jessica Walder, Amy Chytka and Danielle Walder.

Lake Andes Postmaster Ann Vesely received a plaque recently for the honor of being named 573 Postmaster of the Year by the area postmasters.

South Central Action Program was getting a new building.

Nicole Lee was born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Anderson.

Lakeside Apartments, all new eight unit, one-bedroom elderly apartment building, held an open house. It was developed by South Central Community Action Program and financed by FHA.

David Carpenter was promoted to Assistant Vice President, Accounting Department of American Fidelity Assurance Company of Oklahoma City, OK.

Leonard Kisely bought the saw sharpening equipment from Louis Pesicka.

Donald Gasper was elected Fire Chief.

Over 100,000 mallards and 7,000 geese were wintering at the Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge.

Lyle Bergin purchased the Lake Andes Farmers Co-op Service Station.

Darcy Edwards was selected as the DAR candidate.

Dr. Benedict Harman, former resident of Lake Andes, wrote a book titled Everybody Called Him Cedric. The book sold 5,000 copies during the first two weeks in print and covered the life of Cedric Adams, an announcer for WCCO Radio, Minneapolis, for 30 years.

Francis Lhotak was re-elected president of the county NFO.

Marylyn Novotny was chosen as DAR candidate.

Marvin Olson was named assistant county agent of Charles Mix County.

Joe Novak was no longer Commissioner after 28 years in office.

R.W. Auto Supply, a wholesale auto supply firm owned by R.W. (Bob) Schultz, operated from a truck.

A middle of the night blaze destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Soulek and their five small children. No one was injured.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Padrnos and daughters were born to the Jim Herrolds and Karel Vaseks.

D.W. Beemer, Lake Andes Motors, secured the Hudson franchise for the area and had his first Hudson on display.

Hadd's Confectionery was destroyed by fire.

A.P. Williamson was named a member of the highway commission of the Great South Dakota Association.

1940 - 81 Years Ago

Father Henry, founder of St. Joseph's Indian School near Chamberlain and former priest at Marty Mission, was killed in a car accident.

Shorty Hand had wood for sale at $2.50 per ton.

The American Legion was sponsoring a drive to raise money to purchase an iron lung.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fyle Nelson.

1930 - 91 Years Ago

Passenger rates on the Milwaukee Railroad between Platte and Yankton were cut from 3.6¢ to 2¢ per mile.

Carter Camp, 20 miles west of Lake Andes and a half mile north of Wheeler Bridge, sprang up in less than two days in December and boasted 100 people. A.D. Carter of Wagner, Superintendent of a state graveling crew started the camp to house workers. There were 65 hired men, some with wives and families, housed in vans.

Ted Holden and Frank Hazuka both purchased new Ford cars at Andes Motor Sales. The price of a Ford Town Sedan ranged from $430 to $630.

Paul Kasulka was buying furs and paying these top prices: skunk $1.85, mink $8.00, weasel $1.10, badger $18.00 and coyote $10.00.

Five prominent sheep raisers from the area shipped 1,260 lambs to Sioux City where they brought 88.5¢ and 87.5¢.
