10 YEARS AGO

2015

Shopko announced that their Hometown Store in Wagner would be housed in the former Alco building in June.

Wagner High School held their 2015 Prom with the theme,“Night on the Boardwalk.” Prom royalty included Prince Jacob Drapeau, Princess Josephine Young, Queen Jenna Mattis and King Parris Humphrey.

Holly Mattis was proud to announce the birth of her son, Jack William Mattis, on April 9.

The Dante Volunteer Fire Department paid tribute to fallen Valley Springs Volunteer Firefighter, Steve Ackerman, who lost his life while battling a blaze in Brandon.

Tyra Honomichl, a WCS student, was accepted to participate in the 2015 INMED Summer Institute Program at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks.

At Wagner’s annual invitational track meet, the relay team of Sadie Eitemiller, Taylor Eitemiller, Emily Brunsing and Abby Freier took second place.

20 YEARS AGO

2005

The Wagner library celebrated its 90th anniversary with an open house book sale throughout the week.

2005 Prom royalty that were crowned on April 16, were Queen Kristi Soukup; King Brien Roberts; Prince Andrew Bubak and Princess Crystal Dvoracek.

45 YEARS AGO

1980

Phil and Vi Masur were honored on their 40th wedding anniversary on April 20.

Theresa Kocer was chosen Outstanding Jr. Catholic Daughter at the State Convention held in Pierre.

Randy Pirner and Brian Martin received the first-place trophy for the 800-meter run at the Corn Palace relays.

60 YEARS AGO

1965

Incumbent Roy Crisman was re-elected mayor of Wagner. Leo Gau was elected councilman for Ward I by defendant Tom Ptak. Pep Carda won over Ralph Davis to gain a spot as councilman.

Dr. M.A Schuurmans defeated Harold Halter as councilman in Ward I while Charles Trantina retained his position in Ward II by defeating George Smith. Noel Troxell and Clarence Jenison ran unopposed in Ward III. The Wagner Mayor, Casey Buus, also ran unopposed.

Corporal Robert Andersh returned home after being stationed in France for two years.

92 YEARS AGO

1933

Haggar’s Store had the following specials: vanilla extract – $0.20; a quart jar of peanut butter - $0.20; and a gallon of syrup for $0.48.

A new three cent stamp with a picture of George Washington made its first appearance. It was the first stamp approved by President Roosevelt.

The Dante Hardware Store owned by John Sykora and John Fillaus was robbed of money, guns, ammunition, harnesses, and various other articles.

Pat Connors was the elected Mayor of Wagner. Funeral services were held for Pioneer resident, John Stout, who died of cancer. Mr. Stout did a great deal of carpentry work and helped build several of the first buildings in Wagner and also worked in the office of the first newspaper.
