From The Files Of The Lake Andes Wave 10 Years Ago – 2014

Gus Stop III celebrated their 10th anniversary serving free hot dogs and offering door prize drawings.

Rebecca Lehmann and Ashley Kirkpatrick gave a report on their happenings during Girls State Week.

A benefit was held in Geddes for Kaylee Jo Gallagher with Thrivent Financial matching funds up to $500.

The Fort Randall Casino held their annual King and Queen of the Hill.

Dennisha Johanneson participated with the Wagner 18 and Under softball team at the State Softball Tournament.

20 Years Ago – 2004

To honor the centennial of the Lewis & Clark expedition, seventy-two-year-old Bob Holloway from Ephrata, WA decided to fly the route backwards using a powered parachute.

Cyrilla Soulek celebrated her 96th birthday and Charles Seeman celebrated his 95th birthday at the Lake Andes Healthcare Center.

30 Years Ago – 1994

Sam Holderby, secondary principal at the Sioux Valley High School in Volga for the past five years, has been named “Educational Administrator of the Year”.

Harley Zephier was named general manager of the Fort Randall Casino.

After two decades of conservation efforts, the bald eagle is making a comeback and it was proposed that the bald eagle be reclassified from “endangered” to “threatened” in 45 of the lower 48 states, including South Dakota.

40 Years Ago – 1984

Reverend Glen Pearson assumed duties as pastor of the Lake Andes-Wagner Presbyterian Parish.

Beverly Jones received a Decoration of Chivalry pin at the Grand Lodge Odd Fellow and Rebekah meeting. It is the highest honor received in Odd Fellowship, as a recognition of outstanding service to the lodge and community.

50 Years Ago – 1974

Judge George Padrnos retired from his position of Justice of the Peace after serving nine years.

Heath Allen was born to Mr. and Mrs. Allen Soulek.

Shows scheduled to play at the Ft. Randall Auto Vue Drive-in Include “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Beach Party”.

60 Years Ago – 1964

Explorer Scout, Kent Farmer, was awarded the Pro Deo et Patri Award. The Pro Deo et Patri is the highest award made to the Scouts of the Lutheran faith.

A devastating hail storm around 7:30 p.m. Thursday hit west and north of Lake Andes causing complete loss of crops and many broken windows and battered roofs. A second hailstorm hit about 3:00 a.m. doing nearly the same amount of damage to a long stretch from south of Ravinia north, all the way to the Stickney area.

70 Years Ago – 1954

The Charles Mix Electric Association is now receiving all of its electric power from the Fort Randall Dam.

More than 7.000 feet of telephone cable will be placed this summer from the northwest part of Pickstown to the Power house and Intake Works at Fort Randall Dam to provide permanent facilities for government employees and other telephone requirements in the vicinity.

Daughters were born at Ft. Randall hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Gall, Mr. and Mrs. Al Westendorf, Mr. and Mrs. John Welch, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Freund.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Morrow at the Wagner Hospital.

80 Years Ago – 1944

The Club Café is being re-painted and decorated for the re-opening as a café by John Neu and his family.

90 Years Ago – 1934

A twister of tornado velocity wrecked all buildings on the M.E. Leighty farm 12 miles south of Ravinia, except the house which was badly twisted.

100 Years Ago – 1924

O.J. Olson was exhibiting his turtle this week, which if not the grandfather, is at least the great uncle of the turtles in the vicinity. The imprisoned reptile which is of the snapping variety is certainly a monster and will weight 35 to 40 pounds.

Miss Clara Kasulka, daughter of Mrs. Bertha Kasulka of this city who has been in the millinery trade for the past couple of years in St. Paul, was united in marriage to P.A. Peterson of St. Paul.
