ONE-ACT PLAY ADVANCES TO STATE
Tuesday, January 26, Avon High School drama club went to Mitchell Area Community Theatre to participate in the regional One-Act Play competition. Avon drama club got second place in their district, advancing them to the state competition on February 6 in Brookings, South Dakota.
Throughout competition, the actors have an opportunity to excel. A superior award is given when you do all the things you are supposed to do as an actor of another character: know what part you are playing, understand the feelings of the character, speak clearly, and use good enunciation, etc. Rachael DeJong and Noah Watchorn were awarded a superior from all three judges. Haleigh Tjeerdsma and Caleb Wallinga received an award for superior by two judges. Haley Gillette, Kley Heumiller, Kiara Driesen were nominated for a superior by one of the judges. To get a superior award, you have to have two judges nominate a performer or actor get the superior award.
Some cast members shared their favorite bloopers from drama practice. There was a time where Rachael DeJong was in a very serious moment during her performance and she burped very loudly, and everyone laughed. In another blooper, Kley Heumiller was acting like a hillbilly as though the play was a comedy...he was supposed to be a high school boyfriend in a drama. Also, when Kley was supposed to try to kiss Haley Gillette, she swerved away from him in a very dramatic way. Last but not least, a lot of the drama people were missing during one particular practice, so Erica Cahoy turned the play into a one-man show with multiple characters.
