NEW ORAL INTERP COACH ON THE SHIP

By
: Pria Sesler And Jake Namminga
This year, Avon High School welcomes Mrs. Irwin as the new Oral Interp coach. Though new to the coaching role, Mrs. Irwin is no stranger to oral interp. In fact, she first discovered her passion for Oral Interp as a high school student. “I participated in Oral Interp in high school, loved it, and made memories,” she said. Those experiences stuck with her, inspiring her to take on the opportunity to guide students in the same activity. Coaching Oral Interp at Avon was a natural fit for Mrs. Irwin because she already teaches in the school. She also had a strong influence from her English teacher, Mrs. Hento, to do Oral Interp. While the performance aspect is a big part of Oral Interp, Mrs. Irwin hopes her students walk away with more than just polished pieces. “Confidence while speaking” is one of the main skills she wants her team to gain. As for her goals this year, Mrs. Irwin keeps them simple but meaningful, “Having fun, making memories, and winning.” She believes that creativity and structure can work hand in hand when students are performing. “It should be natural when they are being themselves,” she said. For students who may feel nervous before performing, Mrs. Irwin has advice: “have fun and be yourself.” When asked about her favorite event, she answered, “storytelling.” With her experience, and supportive spirit, Mrs. Irwin is ready to lead the Oral Interp team through a season of growth, fun, and lasting memories.
