NEW BUSINESS, PERMANENT UPGRADE, COMES TO TOWN
Shannon Mulder Owen has worked in service and industry her whole life and she is excited to bring her specialty trade of permanent make-up, massage, skin care and more to Wagner because helping others makes her extremely happy.
“I just want to be something different. And give options for: small towns, small town people and the working people at affordable prices,” said Mulder Owen.
From microblading and collagen inductions to massage treatments and lip blushing, Mulder Owen looks forward to offering services that are tailored to what a customer wants and feels comfortable with. She will operate out of Lavender Lane, located at 118 2nd Street SE in Wagner. Her schedule will typically be off appointments. It is her hope that by having customers reach out to her directly, Mulder Owen can be accommodating with busy schedules. She is not afraid to work evenings or weekends. Her goal is to get people the self-care they need.
Mulder Owen is excited to be doing work in Wagner because she herself is a small town girl. She grew up in Luverne, Minnesota and came to the East River area after meeting and marrying Mike Owen from South Dakota. The couple has lived in Yankton for ten years. She detailed, “I live on a little hobby farm.”
It was a variety of situations that led Mulder Owen to start offering spa and care services to those in need. The main jumpstart into the field came from her husband who has multiple sclerosis (MS). He has been employed at Graham Tire for decades and has non-traditional work hours. Mulder Owen would try to find massage therapy appointments for her spouse, but never had any luck locating someone willing to do service in the evenings or when her husband was not on duty.
“I was looking at all of the services we were using for him and the problem was that we couldn’t find people to do massage or to do cupping or foot detox or anything of the sort during usable hours,” remarked Mulder Owen. “You want to get these services done, you need to get them done—you feel so much better and I’m like ‘You know what I’m going to do? That’s what I’m going to do. I am going to be open until ten or eleven o’clock at night so people who work or are self-employed can come’.”
Between her husband’s MS and helping out a friend who is a plastic surgeon, Mulder Owen found her calling. She learned from others in the industry to gain experience and become licensed. She even traveled to Colorado to study under a tattoo artist in his studio. By working late hours or unconventional timeframes, Mulder Owen has been able to help many hardworking adults feel better and feel beautiful.
“Doing what I do fuels my soul,” said Mulder Owen. “I will work whatever hours.”
What she does for a living goes well beyond a massage or permanent make-up tattoo. It makes others feel good about themselves, as well as relaxed and glowing. Mulder Owen recently provided her mobile services to a group of Sioux Falls nurses, who were so excited to have someone there to give them massage treatments. They had all been wanting to do something like this for awhile, but their long hours and shift work made it hard to schedule.
“This is something I love to do, so if the days get long or the hours get crazy—whatever. (Helping) the nurses yesterday, I went home so happy I bawled. They had been wanting to do this forever, but no one would work on them because their hours (were bad),” explained Mulder Owen.
Some of her favorite clients have included morticians who work around the clock hours and are often hunched over, as well as commercial truck haulers who grasp a steering wheel all day long. Both benefited from her cupping therapy. In the coming days Mulder Owen is slated to visit the Marty Indian School in Marty, South Dakota to provide spa treatments to teachers.
“They hired me to come in and give dermaplane collagen inductions and cupping to all of the teachers,” commented Mulder Owen. “A lot of people want these things, but then they work and have kids at home and just don’t have time for it. And they would love it.”
Cupping therapy is just one of many services that Mulder Owen will offer in Wagner. It is done by placing cups on skin to create suction for more blood flow. It is different from compression massage.
“I do more of a treatment, than a massage. So I will cup you, I will do percussion therapy and then if I feel like you need a massage I will give you one. But most of the time, percussion and cupping and then do a cup and drag,” discussed Mulder Owen. “Because what you’re doing is taking that stagnate blood in the muscle and bringing it up to the surface. So then you’re getting rid of all of those toxins in your muscles and you leave feeling just amazing.”
And feeling amazing is what Mulder Owen wants for her clients. She has worked with many who suffer from hair loss and alopecia by providing scalp micropigmentation and microblading, both of which can help enhance the appearance of hair and eyebrows. Mulder Owen also will fix tattoos and provide permanent make-up eyeliner.
She stated, “I want to be something like no one else has ever seen before, but on a very down-to-earth level. My services are all about you, they are not about me. I will customize to any need. I feel like I am service the way it should be and the way it used to be.”
