History was made this past week for the Wagner girls wrestling program as Izzy Myer and Jaylecia Powers became the first Lady Raiders to qualify for the state tournament.
Competing at the regional meet, the Wagner girls battled through tough brackets, with two wrestlers earning podium finishes and securing their spots at the state tournament, set for February 26–28 in Sioux Falls.
At 115 pounds, Izzy Myer put together a strong performance, finishing with a 2-2 record and earning fourth place to qualify for state. Myer showed resilience throughout the day, bouncing back in key matches to secure her historic berth.
Jaylecia Powers delivered an impressive showing at 155 pounds, finishing 3-1 and capturing third place. Powers wrestled with determination and composure, winning crucial matches to guarantee her spot in Sioux Falls. Other regional competitors for Wagner included: 105 pounds – Taya Stone (0-2) 130 pounds – Braelyn Jones (0-2) 145 pounds – Aubrey Kazena (0-2) While Stone, Jones, and Kazena did not advance, their efforts contributed to a milestone day for the growing girls wrestling program.
With Myer and Powers leading the way, Wagner will now turn its focus to the state stage. The pair will represent the Lady Raiders at the state tournament in Sioux Falls, marking a proud moment for the school and community as the program celebrates its first-ever state qualifiers.
The entire community will be cheering them on as they prepare to compete against the best in the state.
