2011 - 10 Years Ago

Frigid temperatures isn't stopping many die-hard fisherman in the area. Temperatures got into the minus teens and 20's overnight, with windchill's minus 30's and 40's. Today's high in Avon was four degrees but forecasts show we should hit the 40's by the weekend.

With sub zero temperatures, numbers were down and the local blood drive.

The Lady Pirates break their losing streak last week as they defeated Ethan 35-28.

Darlene Hauck, Business Ed/ Title I Tutor Aid put in her resignation after 21 years at the Avon School.

Andy and Irene Eben will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with an open house February 20 at the First Baptist Church in Avon.

1986 - 35 Years Ago

A more than capacity crowed witnessed an exiting but disappointing contest with a highly regarded and state ranked Tripp team. Avon couldn't buy a free throw and ended losing 61-65. Joel Tjeerdsma had 10 points.

Blane Nagel, a junior at SDSU, is on the Beef Judging Team.

Just-a Club held their Valentine Pinochle Party at the Nelson Lagendyk home.

House guest at the Junior Schaefer home were Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Schaefer of New York.

Funeral services were held for Maggie Cermak of Wagner, mother of Lois Raysby.

1964 - 57 Years Ago

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Muller were surprised at a house warming at their new home. Twenty-five members of the Presbyterian Bible Class gathered for an evening of singing and visiting The Muller's were presented with an antique rocking chair.

Kenny Eben was honored on his birthday with 25 children attending a party at his home.

Carolyn Juell was home for the weekend from her studies at Brookings.

Mr. and Mrs. Kenny Crouse have a new baby boy, Gerald Kent, born January 28.

The first Adult Education class was held February 13 with 13 people taking the class taught by Miss Dykstra.

High scores of men's bowling were: Albert Johnson 200, Neil Hornstra 199 and John Westling 196.

Mrs. J.C. Greenfield was surprised on her birthday with a buffet lunch and birthday cake.

Mac Voigt and Vernon Dvorak were married February 5 at the Lake Andes Presbyterian Church. The bride is teaching in Lake Andes.

Mr. and Mrs. Monty Ludens will be leaving for their new home in California. The Ray Linton and Clair Brodeens gave a farewell party on Sunday for eight couples.

1935 - 86 Years Ago

The Misses Ella Vilhauer and Maxcine Rauch spent the weekend with home folks. These young ladies are teaching near Delmont.

Rev. Pinnt and family autoed to Norfolk, NE to visit relatives.

First Grade news - James Griffith had a birthday and treated his class to ice cream and cake.

Each high school class is working hard for points tow in the Cardinal and Gold Trophy. The seniors lead with 84 points.

The A Club had a brilliant party for "Gentlemen" only at the school.

1911 - 110 Years Ago

James Johnson let his horses out in his pasture for a run. Two of them got in a bucking match and one had a hind leg broken just below the knee joint. A rifle was used to end the misery. James had refused $200 for the animal last spring.

There will be a Valentine Social at the Walter Scott home just south of Wagner church. All are invited to attend.

Special meetings will be held every evening next week at 7 o'clock at Danzig, 7 miles northeast of Avon.

Miss Beth Scribbins and pupils of Sperry School have a successful social of entertainment where $24 was raised to buy maps.

A fine looking lot of school teachers attending teacher examinations in Tyndall this week.
