2001 - 20 YEARS AGO

Voters came out in big numbers for the rescheduled election for the fate of Sunday alcohol sales. The big numbers sent the message that the majority of Avon residents do not want bars to be open on Sundays.

Lucy and Ernie Hento celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

The Avon fourth grade class was selected as class of the month for February.

1986 - 35 YEARS AGO

Welcome Signs at the three gas stations announce gas prices at .99 regular and 1.02 for No Lead.

Pirates won 47-45 over Scotland as Kevin DeJong dropped in the winning basket with just seconds on the clock. Randy Mount scored 15.

Rodney Van Gerpen was honored on his birthday at the Dale Van Gerpen home.

Mark Namminga is serving as a page for Ed Van Gerpen, Rep. in Pierre.

Monday Reading Club met at the home of Mary Bonin.

1971 - 50 YEARS AGO

Five area rural schoolhouses, no longer in use and belonging to the Avon Independent School District will go on the auction block.

The surging Avon Pirates put away two more foes over the past week, bombing Springfield 61-42 and getting pasts Armour 63-55.

A pound of butter was on sale at /Weidenback Super Saver for 75¢ and two pounds of Butternut Coffee for only $1.69.

Rosalee Eben was winner of the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Award for 1970-71.

1964 - 57 YEARS AGO

After three terms as Mayor, John Engel will not run for re-election.

T.C. Pier celebrated his 89th birthday at the Ralph Pier home.

Mrs. Herlan Knoll took her Sunday School Class to Parkston for a bowling party.

Friedensburg Mission Society held an all day sewing meeting. Members brought a sack lunch. Dessert was served by Mrs. Albert Ratzlaff and Mrs. Bessie Van Duysen.

1935 - 86 YEARS AGO

17 different families will be moving soon to different farms int he area.

Franklin Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Smith is now employed as a pharmacist in Minot, ND.

Clayton Crosby, Wm. Holleman, John Hucht, Robert Griffith and Ted Steckler attended the meeting of the boosters for the “Gavin’s Point” dam site at Yankton.

The Band is working on the William Tell Overture for the band concert.

James School YCL officers are Pres. Irene Voigt, Vice Pres. Phyllis Genant and Sec. Willis Engel.

1911 - 110 YEARS AGO

The Art Rauch family is enjoyed an extended visit to Wisconsin as Art is helping George splitting rails and making fire wood.

Albert Vauk has purchased the cement building occupied by Schram.
