LITTLE NATIONS DANCE CAMP HOSTED BY BRAVE HEART SOCIETY

By

The YST Law enforcement auxiliary gym in Lake Andes came alive during this past week of June 6-10 with the dancing feet of tiny tots and older youth under the enthusiastic teaching of Jackie Bird. Jackie is a loved performer and a grandmother who brings alive Native designs, songs, stories, hoop dancing and special performances. Her last visit was at the 17th Annual Waterlily Storytelling Institute in March 2022 at Andes Central.

This week she had over 30 local youth participate for five days in learning tribal songs and dance. The last day they performed for their parents with a grand entry, special categories and sang “Love sick Blues” 49 song with Jackie. This dance camp was made possible by the Brave Heart Tribal Arts Project supported by the Waterers circle. Brave Heart made a special invite to families who may not currently participate on the pow wow trail but want to learn and prepare for the coming pow wow season.

Special thanks to the parents who transported their children, to Amelia Spotted Eagle for organizing, Stephanie Cournoyer for snacks, the Rising Hail Drum, the YST Law Enforcement, all those that pitched in and helped in any way and of course the much-loved Jackie Bird. Special thanks to the youth who danced their hearts to the fullest and most certainly are ready for the Greenwood 4th of July pow wow.
