City library news. 9-10-25 In August 2025, eighteen public libraries across South Dakota were awarded accreditation, recognizing their commitment to providing high-quality services to their communities. These libraries have met important benchmarks and are accredited at one of three levels: Essential, Enhanced, or Exemplary.

To achieve accreditation, libraries must meet the South Dakota Public Library Standards in areas such as governance, administration, access, collections and resources, funding, staffing, technology, and public relations.

“By participating in this volunteer program, the staff and trustees of these libraries demonstrate their dedication to quality library services,” said State Librarian George Seamon. “I encourage everyone in these communities to visit their library and see what they have to offer.”

The following libraries received accreditation.

Brookings Public Library, Exemplary; Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library, Exemplary; Grace Balloch Memorial Library (Spearfish), Exemplary; Rapid City Public Library, Exemplary; Yankton Community Library, Exemplary; Beresford Public Library, Enhanced; Mitchell Public Library, Enhanced; Alcester Community Library, Essential; Avon Public Library, Essential; Bowdle Public Library, Essential; Doland Community Library, Essential; Emil M. Larson Public Library (Clark), Essential; Freeman Public Library, Essential; Huron Public Library, Essential; Keystone Town Library, Essential; Lake Andes Public Library, Essential; Madison Public Library, Essential; Marcus P. Beebe Memorial Library (Ipswich), Essential.

Accreditation awards are valid for three years. A complete list of all currently accredited libraries is available on the South Dakota State Library’s website.

I would like to thank the Library Board members and the City of Lake Andes for their continued support for the Lake Andes Public Library. Without this support the library would not be able to provide the programming and services that are available at the library.
