Last week the Library article included 3 descriptions of books we have available for check out at the Lake Andes Library to read to commemorate Native American Heritage Month, which is November, 2022.
The next three selections begins with “Red Cloud, Oglala Legend” written by John D. Mc-Dermott. This selection is part of the South Dakota Biography Series. A celebrated warrior who led his people to victory on the battle-field, Red Cloud was also a skilled diplomat wo transitioned the Oglala Sioux to reservation life. This book examines Red Cloud’s early years, his rise to prominence and his struggle to protect his people from cultural domination. “Red Cloud, Oglala Legend”, is the fourth book in the South Dakota Biography Series, which highlights some of the state’s most famous residents.
Our 2nd selection is “The Lakota Way” written by Joseph Marshall III. Rich with storytelling, history, and folklore, this selection expresses the heart of Native American philosophy and imparts the path to a fulfilling and meaningful life. Marshall focuses on the twelve core qualities that are crucial to the Lakota way of living – bravery, fortitude, generosity, wisdom, respect, honor, perseverance, love, humility, sacrifice, truth, and compassion – and illustrates them with personal stories and archetypal Lakota tales.
Our 3rd selection is “The Night Watchman” written by Louise Erdrich. “ Erdrich is a defender and raconteur of the lives of her people. Her intimate knowledge of the Native American world in collision with the white world has allowed her, over more than a dozen books, to create a brilliantly realized alternate history as rich as Faulker’s Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi.” O. The Oprah Magazine. The Tampa Bay Times states “ No one can break your heart and fill it with light. . . quite like Louise Erdrich”. The Night Watchman is a majestic work of fiction from one of the most acclaimed writers of our time.
