I am a pet owner. Seventy percent of U.S. households, or about 90.5 million families, own a pet, according to the 2021-2022 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA). As pet owners we know there are certain things our pets need, but do we know what common household items can be poisonous to our pets?

March is Pet Poison Prevention Month. Have you ever wondered if a particular household cleaning product or human medication is poisonous to your pets? The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) has provided the following guide for knowing which cleaning products, human medications and cosmetic items to keep out of your pet’s reach. Please remember that this guide is for general information only and is not intended to help assess or manage animal exposures, or any subsequent time-sensitive medical issues. If you suspect your pet has been exposed to any poisonous substances, contact your veterinarian or call APCC’s hotline at (888) 426-4435 immediately.

You may ask how does Pet Poisoning Prevention Month tie into a public library? The answer is that we have many books/ DVDS about pets. Come in to find out more about your pet, how to keep them healthy, how to prevent poisoning and how to make them the best friend you could ever have.
