Continuing with the recent books purchased for the Library on the subject of 9/11 our next book is “Seven and a half Tons of Steel” by Janet Nolan is the story of a steel beam from the World Trade Center towers was given to the United States Navy to build a ship called the USS New York. This powerful story reveals how something remarkable can emerge from a devastating event.

“A Very Large Expanse of Sea” by Tahereh Mafi is a gorgeous and hearttrending new novel inspired by her own experiences with first love, breakdancing, and the devastating impact of prejudice. Set in 2002, a year after 9/11 and Shirin has just started at yet another school. It’s an extremely turbulent time for the world, but also for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who’s tired of being stereotyped.

“All we Have Left” by Wendy Mills, is a story intertwining the past and present, this haunting and heart-wrenching story brings one of the most important days in our history to life, showing that hatred and love have the power to reverberate far into the future.

“Big Apple Diaries” by Alyssa Bermudez is a graphic novel where 7th grade, and everything is changing for Alyssa. Being popular is ;more important than ever, there’s a new kid (Alejandrol) she has a huge crush on, and it’s impossible to stay on top of schoolwork. There are tougher things to think about too, like how to split her time between her parent’s homes and what it means to be a “real” Puerto Rican. Luckily, writing and drawing aboiut her worries is helping Alyssa figure it out . . . until an unimaginable tragedy strikes. Will anything ever make sense again?
