Dear Editor:
Recently, I set out to collect letters of appreciation for Don Sternhagen, a local veteran who was preparing to take part in an upcoming Midwest Honor Flight. My hope was to fill an envelope with messages of thanks for him to read on his return flight—something simple yet meaningful to honor his service. I reached out to Mrs. Loretta Knodel at Avon Elementary, and to say the school stepped up is an understatement. Not only did Mrs. Knodel have her own class participate in the endeavor, but she also passed the request along to other teachers. The result was exceptional—an outpouring of heartfelt notes and drawings from students across the elementary school. It’s been years since I’ve lived in Avon, but I sure do love my hometown. It’s comforting to know that some things never change— especially the caring spirit of its people and the strength of its schools. My deepest thanks to Mrs. Knodel and everyone at Avon Elementary. Your kindness made a lasting impact on Don and reminded us all of the power of community. Karen (Jonkers) Lang Platte, SD
