LEGISLATIVE UPDATE FROM REP. JESSICA BAHMULLER

By
Jessica Bahmuller District 19 Representative Alexandria
Let’s talk my assigned committees. In Commerce and Energy Committee we see a wide variety of topics ranging from professional licensing, business requirements, insurance, tobacco, alcohol, gambling to my personal favorite the many forms of energy…. It’s safe to say we all appreciated heat this time of year. Every topic we see is different. This week we discussed and debated autonomous vehicles. I supported HB 1095 an act to establish provisions for the operation of automated motor vehicles. Currently, there are no restrictions in place for autonomous vehicles in South Dakota and whether you or I support them or not they need regulation. HB 1095 sets a foundation for the operation of autonomous vehicles. I also serve on Local Government. Local Government consists of bills relating to counties, municipalities, towns and townships, water and fire districts and much more. This week we discussed supporting community centers in local communities. With there being 309 incorporated municipalities, I do not believe it is the fiscal responsibility of the state to provide funding for these local projects. We simply cannot set the precedent of picking winning and losing communities; therefore, I did not support HB 1102 and HB 1103 acts to provide community centers and they were deferred to the 41st day. District 19 had visitors from Hanson and Tripp-Delmont High Schools. If you have plans of visiting the capitol, I will ask that reach out to all the delegation. We have conflicting schedules, and we don’t want to miss talking with you. With the VFW, American Legion and Veterans Affairs I had the honor in attending the unveiling of the USS 38 Pierre painting. I live by saying we do not know them all, but we owe them all. District 19 is fortunate to have Anna Arnold serve as the VFW Quartermaster/Adjutant. Thank you, Anna, for your dedicated service and service to all veterans. We are approaching the 400 mark for bills introduced. I appreciate all those who have reached out. Thank you for allowing me to serve you. God Bless, Jessica Bahmuller Jessica.Bahmuller@sdlegislature.gov (605)359-9459
