LEGION VS PLATTE

By
Coach Matt Slaba

On Tuesday, June 25, the Platte-Geddes Whitecaps American Legion team traveled to Wagner to take on its Post 11 squad.

The game started well for Wagner as we jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. Hunter Loeffler led off the game with a walk. Ted Slaba singled him over to third and Matt Link followed that up with a walk. Platte-Geddes’ Caden Oberbroekling, who will pitch at Augustana next year, would strike the next two batters out. Loeffler was then successful on a straight steal of home to get Wagner the early lead.

After two were out in the second, Loeffler once again worked a walk. He proceeded to steal second and score on another Slaba single. Link drew his second walk of the night and both he and Slaba would eventually score on the same wild pitch.

Carter Cournoyer was the starting pitcher for Wagner. He got through the first two innings unscathed but would give up one run in the third. Things would really come undone in the fourth inning. The Whitecaps connected on back-to-back doubles to start. A fielder’s choice would yield one out but two singles, two walks, and an error ended Cournoyer’s night prematurely and Wagner could not answer back as they fell to Platte-Geddes by a score of 15-4.

Offensively for Wagner, to go along with Slaba’s two singles, Joey Cournoyer doubled while Carlin Hopkins and Christian Doom each had a hit. Loeffler would end up drawing four walks and scoring two runs.

Platte-Geddes only had one other hit after the fourth inning, that being a bunt single, but they used seven walks, two hit batsmen, and some wild pitches to tack on their extra runs.
