LEGION VS CHAMBERLAIN

By
Coach Matt Slaba

On Tuesday, June 18, Wagner’s Post 11 American Legion baseball team played host to Chamberlain.

This one was a pretty good pitcher’s duel contrasting two styles. Ted Slaba would be Wagner’s pitcher of record. He used mostly off-speed pitches to keep Chamberlain’s hitters off balance, throwing a complete game on 81 pitches. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out one. He went up against Chamberlain’s Dakota Wesleyan bound Dakota Munger. There was no subtlety to his game as he came with straight heat more often than not. He would limit Wagner to one run on five hits while striking out 10 and walking two to lead Chamberlain to the 2-1 win.

Wagner scored first in the second inning as Carter Cournoyer, who led off with a single, would come around to score on a Landon Mudder infield single and an error.

A walk and back to back singles after two were out and no one on allowed Chamberlain to score its first run in the third inning. They would get the decisive run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

Wagner did get the tying run in scoring position in the last inning but couldn’t get him in.

Offensively Wagner was led by Christian Doom who had two singles. Mudder, Cournoyer, and Carlin Hopkins had the other hits for Wagner.

Defensively we couldn’t have played much better as there was not one Wagner error on the night. The fact that there was only one strikeout makes that all the more impressive. Doom was especially stellar at the hot corner as he cleanly fielded all six balls sent his way.
