LEADERSHIP: STEPPING UP VS. STANDING OUT
What is leadership? Leadership is defined as motivating a group of people to act toward achieving a common goal. Being a good leader is setting your standards and getting them done. “I believe that I am stepping up to be a leader for being the president of the student council of Avon High,” senior Keely Bares said. So...what is the difference between standing out and stepping up?
Standing out is when you do things on your own in order to be noticed. Quite often you may be naturally better at something. In some cases, the person is in it for the glory. People may follow that person on their own, but it is their choice to follow that person or not.
Stepping up in leadership is like taking responsibility...choosing what is right compared to what is popular. Another way to think of stepping up for leadership is when you are in a group and a person steps up and is organized and volunteers to be a speaker. People feel compelled to follow that person. A person who is stepping up takes responsibility.
So, who are you?
