LATE RACE HEROICS THRILL FANS AT WAGNER FRIDAY NIGHT
On a night that was presented by the South Dakota Lottery, luck would show its full spectrum, both good and bad, Friday at Wagner Speedway.
The Roth Custom Farming Hobby Stocks would begin the excitment and just as the case in week one, Joey Jaton (Wagner) and Jordan Vosika (Gregory), would be the story. Opening night say Vosika outlast Jaton to take the victory. But the sequel saw a much different ending. Vosika got a good start from his fifth starting spot, but Jaton, who started fourth, was finally able to get past Vosika and hold on for his first win of the season. Needless to say, Jaton was excited in victory lane. "It was amazing. It was really really good. It took all week to get it fixed but we're here and having fun." Getting past Vosika was no small feat either. "It was kind of tough for a little bit there, because I couldn't find a line I wanted to run. Finally, I just (made my move) and hoped for the best, because he was running the bottom like I wanted to. I just had to wait for him to mess up, but he's an awesome racer and I love racing against him." Following them across the line were Brenden Rassel (Woonsocket), Colby Kaspar (Columbus, NE) with rookie Kaylb Brunssen (LeMars, IA) rounding out the top five, working his way up from 16th. Heat races were won by Rassel and Jaton.
Next up would be the Brad Fox Grinding and Namminga Hay Grinding Late Model Street Stocks, making their first appearance at the track in 2020, with Brylee Gough (Sioux Falls) showing the field that he was not going to be denied. Victory was sweet, especially how the 2020 season has been so far. "With the way the year has been going, I've had a couple DNF's (Did Not Finish) already, so it's good to finally turn things around." John Hoing (Hartford), Ron Howe (Wentworth), Billy Prouty (Alexandria) and Darwin Iedema (Geddes) would complete the top five. The heat was won by J.J. Zebell (Parker).
When the Ponca Valley Seeds Sport Mods took the track, it became a two-car battle, with Kendall McCarthy (Naper, NE) withstanding a strong challenge from Josh Pfeifer (St. Paul, NE) to pick up the hardware. McCarthy knew with the talent behind him, the pressure was on. "The car got a little hot on me toward the end and we had a little trouble with that last week too. I knew if I screwed up just once, there were some good guys on my tail, so I just tried to hold my line. It was a good track, I loved it." After McCarthy and Pfeifer, Wes Hochstein (Randolph, NE), Dudley Schroeder, Jr (Armour) and Kevin McCarthy (Naper, NE) completed the top five. Josh Pfeifer won the heat race.
The race of the night was the feature event in the Butte Implement B-Mods, as Wade Wright (Ravinia) was able to stave off all challenges to pick up the win from his fifth position. Two of the top drivers in the B-Mod division, Camden Myers (Ethan) and Tyler Myers (Alexandria) would continue to put the pressure on for much of the race before the elder Myers (Tyler) had to retire from the event with mechanical failures. Once the green flew for the restart, Kyle Pecena (O'Neill, NE) would join in on the chase. With Wright leading late, Myers pulled up alongside Wright and looked to have a good run to take to top spot, but Wade would be too much on this night, hanging on for the checkers. There was no doubt that Wright knew he had company out there. "I knew he was there (Myers). I just didn't know how quick he was gonna come up on me. We were able to hold him off and picked our way throught traffic. After leading all those laps at the end there, I did what I needed to do to secure the win. We rubbed a little bit, but that's racing." Myers, who began the race from the eighth spot, would settle for a close second with Pecena coming from seventh to take third. Logan Kafka (Wagner) and Raymond Bigge (Armour) completed the top five. Heat races were won by Tyler Myers and Kyle Pecena.
Lastly, the C&B Operations of Wagner Late Models rolled out and these drivers did not disappoint. Terry McCarthy (Springview, NE) jumped out to the early lead from his second starting position with pole sitter Gale Vogt (Yankton) in tow. Following a heated battle with Seth Fischer (Wagner) and Doug Tomka (Stanton, NE), Vogt was able to gain some separation from those two and set his sights on the leader. McCarthy had a comfortable lead until he drifted high in turn two and Vogt seized the moment. Taking the bottom line, Vogt was able to capitalize and get by McCarthy to park his chariot in victory lane. A tired Vogt knew this race was a handful. "Do you know how hard it is to come talk to you? It's a lot of work to get up here!!!" As he tried to catch his breath, Vogt described how he got there. "He got me on the start. McCarthy had a heck of a run tonight. He started making a few mistakes and luckily, I was able to capitalize. I'm sure there were some people breathing down my neck, luckily I was able to manhandle this thing to the front." McCarthy would settle for the runner up spot, Tomka would take third, with Jared Hoerle (Chambers, NE) and Nick Grehl (Hitchcock) completing the top five. The heat races were taken by Vogt and McCarthy.
This Friday night, the Brad Fox Grinding and Namminga Hay Grinding Late Model Street Stocks, the C&B Operations of Wagner Late Models, the Butte Implement B-Mods, the Ponca Valley Seeds Sport Mods and the Roth Custom Farming Hobby Stocks will be joined by the Manthey Farms Sport Compact front wheel drives. The pits open at 4pm, grandstands open at 5pm, hot laps begin at 7:15pm with racing to follow.
