LAKE ANDES FARMERS MARKET WEEK CELEBRATION

The Lake Andes Food and Wellness Council hosted this year’s Lake Andes Farmers Market Week Celebration at the community garden on August 15th. There were seven vendors including the Donut Department, Community Garden/ The Lake Andes Food and Wellness Council, two lemonade stands, Leah Antelope, Birdie Beads, Wagner American Blue Cattle and American Blue Beef and Jackie Johnson.
Leah Antelope had canned, baked goods and homemade items available. The Donut Department was serving their delicious donuts. The community garden had fresh veggies for sale. The Wagner American Blue Beef was selling fresh beef. Jackie Johnson had canned goods, eggs, fresh produce and handmade items available for sale. Birdie Beads had many handmade items on hand for sale.
There were also several informational booths including SDSU extension with a preservation booth with canning tips and recipes and the Better Choices, Better Health booth had many yummy and healthy recipes available. It was a great success, having about 200 people in attendance.
There were many prizes available to win including $10 gift certificates to the Farmers Market provided by The Lake Andes Food and Wellness Council and SDSU Extension, water bath canning set, $100 gift certificates to Cahoy’s donated by the Yankton Sioux Tribe Early Childhood Program, vacuum sealer, canning tools, USDA Complete Guide to Home Canning, half pint and pint jars, set of hot pads, lid lifter set, plants donated by Leah Antelope and bikes donated by Pedal Power at the Pen- Mike Durfee State Penitentiary. With each bike a helmet and a bike lock were given which was provided by The Lake Andes Food and Wellness Council and Connected Communities Initiative (SDSU Extension).
The Lake Andes Food and Wellness Council consists of 15 community members. They meet once a month via zoom on the first Thursday of every month for about thirty minutes in the afternoon. The Council’s goals are to better the community through nutrition and physical activity with emphasis on mental health. They have completed several community projects including exercise equipment at the city park, the community garden, donating fresh food to the ROCS, the Native American Resources Center and to Andes Central School. They are currently working on sidewalk safety to help students be better able to walk to school safely. The Farmers Market will continue every Tuesday from 4pm-6pm at the community garden until the first frost.
