The Wagner Lady Raiders traveled to Chamberlain last Friday night to take on SESD foe the Chamberlain Cubs and returned home with an impressive varsity victory to close out the regular season’s final stretch.
Wagner wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to a 9-0 lead and holding a commanding 17-6 advantage after the first quarter. The rout continued as the Lady Raiders outscored the Cubs 49-12 over the final three quarters to secure a decisive 66-18 win.
The Raiders were dominant on both ends of the floor. Wagner shot a scorching 26-of-43 from the field for 61 percent, while holding Chamberlain to just 6-of-32 shooting for 19 percent. Wagner also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Cubs 26-10, and took care of the basketball with just seven turnovers compared to 18 by Chamberlain.
Ashlyn Koupal led all scorers with 19 points and filled the stat sheet with 12 rebounds, five assists, three steals and two blocks. Braxton Nedved followed with 14 points and three assists. Hannah Holzbauer and Mateya Bruguier each added nine points, with Holzbauer also contributing three rebounds and three steals.
Ravyn Medricky tallied five points, five rebounds and three assists, while Hayden Knudsen chipped in four points and four boards. Camry Link, Clarah Soukup and Peytyn Wiechmann each added two points off the bench to round out the scoring.
“Defensively we really got it done again tonight, allowing only four points in the second half,” said the coach. “We did a great job offensively getting paint touches, finishing at the rim and then knocking down open looks from the perimeter where we converted at a high clip. The JV squad came up short in another back-and-forth contest but showed determination throughout.
Peytyn Wiechmann led all scorers with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals. Camry Link added eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds to go along with two steals. Mila Hopkins contributed five points, while Clarah Soukup finished with four points, five rebounds and five steals. TyShay Medicine Bear added four points and two boards, and Olivia Podzimek rounded out the scoring with one point and two steals.
Despite the loss, the JV Lady Raiders continued to show growth and competitiveness as the season heads toward postseason play.
