LADY PIRATES ROLL PAST THUNDER, GIVE COACH POPPE 500TH WIN

The Avon Lady Pirates traveled to Lake Andes on Thursday evening, January 22, to take on the Andes Central/ Dakota Christian Thunder in a double-header and came away with an impressive 60-30 victory. Avon set the tone early and never looked back, building momentum on both ends of the floor. Rilyn Thury led the Lady Pirates with a standout performance, pouring in 24 points to go along with 12 steals and five assists. Brielle Voigt added 20 points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds. Thury, Breanna Hento, and Kaydence Metzger each grabbed five rebounds in the win. As a team, Avon shot 41 percent from the field, hitting 24 of 59 shots. The Lady Pirates connected on 42 percent of their three-point attempts (5 of 12), 40 percent from inside the arc (19 of 47), and 39 percent from the free-throw line (7 of 18). Avon limited mistakes, committing just 10 turnovers on the night. The victory improves the Lady Pirates’ record to 8-4 on the season. Beyond the decisive win, the night carried special significance as it marked Coach Brad Poppe’s 500th career win as head coach of the Avon Pirates—a milestone achievement reflecting years of dedication, leadership, and success in the Avon basketball program.
