The Avon Lady Pirates volleyball team celebrated a special evening Tuesday as they hosted Corsica-Stickney for Dig Pink Night and Parents Night, honoring both their seniors and a beloved community member in front of a supportive hometown crowd. The Pirates captured the win in four sets, defeating the Jaguars 25-14, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20 to improve their record to 17-9 on the season. Community Comes Together for a Cause The evening carried special meaning beyond the court. Avon’s Post Prom Committee organized the annual Dig Pink event, selling shirts to raise funds for a local community member battling cancer. For the fifth consecutive year, all proceeds from the shirt sales were donated to help defray medical and travel expenses. This year’s recipient was Wally Voigt, a lifelong Avon resident, alumni, and proud Pirate fan. Wally has been courageously battling various forms of cancer for over 20 years and continues to receive chemotherapy treatments every three weeks. He attended the game with his wife, Deb. The couple’s daughter, Amy, also an Avon graduate, lives in Wagner with her husband, Matt, and daughters, Emma and Lydia. During the evening’s recognition, the Post Prom Committee presented a $300 donation, which was matched by the Avon/Dante Pink Ladies, bringing the total to $500. Pirates Earn Hard-Fought Win On the court, Avon showed grit and teamwork to secure the win. Rilyn Thury led the attack with 22 kills, while Kaydence Metzger added 11. Defensively, Jordyn Voigt and Brielle Voigt were all over the court, each tallying 22 digs. At the net, Abby Gretschman recorded 7 blocks and Breanna Hento chipped in 2. Brielle Voigt also paced the offense with 33 assists, helping the Pirates find their rhythm throughout the match. From the service line, Lexi Vanderlei and Kaydence Metzger each contributed 3 aces, with Jordyn Voigt adding 1, to keep Corsica-Stickney off balance. For the visiting Jaguars, Sophie DeLange led with 16 kills and 3 aces, while Braylee Bordewyk added 12 kills and 14 assists. Defensively, Hadynn Johnson notched 22 digs, and Cali Vanden Hoek added 19. The Pirates’ JV team also came away victorious, winning 25-17, 25-22. A Night of Volleyball and Community Spirit Between strong performances on the court and heartfelt moments off it, Avon’s Dig Pink and Parents Night was a shining example of community unity.
