Fall is quickly approaching and with it comes Wagner’s most impressive mobilization of community, the annual Wagner Labor Day celebration. This marks the fifth year that Boys & Girls Club has teamed up with the Labor Day Committee to create a Labor Day Queen Event. We know that culture and leadership greatly influence a community’s environment and the future success of our young people. To this end, we have created a few traditions around the Labor Day Queen experience for young women.
Each year we feature a platform for support and education in which a luncheon event is hosted by older women for the candidates. This year’s theme was Anxiety and Depression, Practical Support, and Best Practices.
The candidates are each encouraged to name a female mentor who has had a significant impact on their lives. This year, in addition to the mentor, we expanded the relationship connections to include younger females that the candidates themselves have actively mentored. This provides the candidates with a giving and receiving experience that enhances the fabric of healthy community.
Here are our 2024 Labor Day Queen Candidates along with their mentor and mentee relationships: Madi Robertson is the daughter of Randy Robertson and Jen Robertson. She will be a senior at Wagner School this year. Madi’s mentors include Kara Frei and her late maternal grandmother Judy Schmidt. Madi’s mentee is Aspen Schroeder. Madi plans to attend Mitchell Tech after graduation to study in the Power Lineman Program.
Lydia Yost is the daughter of Matt and Amy Yost. She will be a senior at Wagner School this year. Lydia’s mentor is her older sister Emma Yost. Lydia’s mentees are Tyshay and Kiyani Medicine Bear. Lydia plans to join the ROTC program and have a career in the Public Affairs division of the Airfare. Please come out to meet these girls and their families on Friday August 30th at 7:00 P.M. at the Wagner Armory. We have a special program planned which will highlight the girls and their business sponsors in a video presentation.
We would like to recognize the current Labor Day Queen Event Committee: Alyssia Thompson, Jazmyn Soukup, and Brittany Beeson. We thank Wagner Area Growth for co-sponsoring our Women’s Luncheon, Jeff Doom for the fly-over Wagner airplane rides, and Saydae Bures of Bures and Associates for the Queen Event video production.
