JUNIOR HIGH BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM ATTENDS BON HOMME TOURNAMENT
Avon junior high boys basketball team placed 6th at the Bon Homme Tournament (sponsored by their Booster Club) in Tyndall on January 30.
In the first game of the tournament, the boys played a very talented team from Hanson and were defeated by a score of 40-11. Scoring for the Pirates were Trevor Eggers with five, Devin Rucktaeschel with four, and Aziah Meyers adding two for the team as well.
Their second game, they faced the 7th grade Platte-Geddes team and had a great win. The final score was 27-17. Helping the Pirates with the win was Meyer with 13, Eggers adding nine, Pierces Jonkers with three and Rucktaeschel scoring two. Coach Ron Swier said, “The young Pirates worked hard on defense, and they all worked hard to contribute to the win.”
The final game of the day, the Pirates faced the Platte-Geddes 8th grade team. Due to injuries of a few of the Pirates, Coach Swier had to do a lot of subbing. Unfortunately, the Pirates lost 40-11. Coach Swier said, “I felt if we could have had more players available, we could have competed with this team.” Scoring for the Pirates were Eggers with five, Rucktaescehl again with four and Meyers putting up another two points.
Coach Swier said, “I was pleased with the way my team played, and I want more young Pirates to compete. I feel that the boys will be competitive the rest of the season.” The junior high boys will be heading to another tournament in Armour on February 13.
