JR. SR. DOUBLEHEADER IN ALEXANDRIA

By

On Monday, June 9, Wagner’s Post 11 Junior and Senior Legion teams traveled to Alexandria for a doubleheader. In the first contest Wagner lost a tight, extra-inning game by a score of 4-3. Edward Ulrich started the game and lasted 6.2 innings and did a fine job of keeping us in the game. He gave up three earned runs on nine hits while walking five and striking out nine. After reaching his pitch limit, Avery Medicine was called upon in a tight situation. There were two runners on with two outs upon his arrival. He walked the first batter but induced the following hitter into an inning ending pop up to the shortstop to send the game into extras. After Wagner went down quietly in the top of the 8th, Alexandria started the inning with a double off the wall, advancing to third on a throwing error. Avery kept his composure and got the next man to hit a harmless infield fly for the first out. Unfortunately, Alexandria would score the game winning run after the runner from third got in a rundown that was mishandled.

At the plate, Wagner only managed three hits. Trey Segura had a big two out, bases loaded single to plate two runs. Beau Otte collected two infield hits and scored two runs while Ulrich scored the other run for Wagner.

In the nightcap, Wagner would send Carter Cournoyer to the mound for his second start of the year and he would pitch brilliantly. Like Ulrich the game before, he would last 6.2 innings before reaching his limit of pitches. He would only give up one unearned run on five hits while striking out ten and walking four. Frank Soukup then came on in the bottom of the 7th with a runner on first and the leadoff hitter at the plate. Frank would promptly set him down on strikes to earn the save and seal the win for Post 11.

Wagner’s defense was solid except for one error in the first inning that allowed the run to score. Landon Mudder threw a dart from the leftfield line to second base in the 7th inning to nab the runner trying to stretch a single into a double for a huge second out. Joey Cournoyer, who was rock solid behind the plate, threw out one would-be base stealer. Ulrich and Malakai Segura were smooth on the left side of the infield, handling all their chances cleanly.

Wagner only mustered four hits to accumulate their three runs. Ulrich collected two of those to go along with two runs batted in. Segura doubled, walked, and scored two runs. Brady Cournoyer had the other Wagner hit to go along with a walk. Soukup reached base twice on a walk and hit by pitch and scored one run on a wild pitch.
